“Cool, Clear Water”

Description from Little Round Chick: When I was teaching I taught a social study unit on cowboys and the old west. An important part of the studies was learning genuine western/cowboy songs. I taught the students one of my favorite songs from my childhood, (during the 1940's). It was "Cool Clear Water." It is about a cowboy and his horse crossing the desert. As they are going along the cowboy is singing to his horse about the water they will have at the end of the ride.

I grew up listening to that song. My dad was a huge country western fan. What grade did you teach?

LRC, you deserve a gem covered crown! My teammate and I watched those kinder teachers and admired their patience with their brood. I spent my first 16 years with 4th traders and 2 of those years I had a 3rd grade group and a 4th grade group. My last 5 years I had Kinder through 5th grade students in gifted and talented pullout program.

My kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Mars, had more influence on the direction of my life than any of my teachers, although I don’t think I ever saw her after the term was over. She brought in her twelve year old daughter, who showed some paintings. Mrs. Mars said her daughter was an artist. I decided right then that I was going to be an artist like this girl, who seemed wonderful to me. Some of the arts I have worked in or explored include painting, drawing, illustration, animation, art direction, film making, video production, photography, dress designing, jewelry design, beading, assemblage (box art). Never underestimate the power of a kindergarten teacher!

A couple of years ago I ran into a former student at one of the local stores. He was the assistant manager I think. We started chatting and he said one of his best memories from Kindergarten was when we did the “Three Piggy Opera.” I produced and directed an opera with Kindergarten and 1st grade students. The parents loved it. I was ready to be committed to the nut house. :D

What wonderful things you have all done! “all day I’ve faced the barren waste.. without the taste of water, cool water,” Great pick, great conversation!

I remember sons of the pioneers singing that song! along with tumbling tumbleweeds- good ole days! and your selection goes perfectly since the colors were all in my imagination because we had a black and white tv.

Great nostalgic pick, LRC! That song played all the time on our kitchen radio when I was a kid. Also Tumblin’ Tumbleweeds, which I changed the lyrics to “bumblin’ along with the bumbulin’ bumblebees” for my kids in summer. I still sing Cool Water to my kitty as I gave him his water. “Coooool cleeear waah-ter….(water)” loved the echo.
