“Desert journeys...”

Description from J Yee smart chick: My friend came over to my place last weekend, and she enjoyed seeing all the natural gemstone beads that I have accumulated thru years of beading. She picked out a lovely cream colored turtle bead as her focal, and then chose some copper and amber beads from a Toho mix named Kohaku, some crazy lace and yellow moss agate rounds, and some fire polished beads - all the while telling me, "I have not a creative bone in my body!", yet she has an excellent sense of color already.

It was so much fun to work with her as she practiced beading for the first time, and was enjoying seeing all the beads I have - she told me she likes her necklaces to be ones that are simple, with the same spacing and kinds of beads between the bigger ones, in contrast to me - I like to be more random in my choices of the smaller beads between the larger ones, as long as the overall color palette is what I want it to be.

I assured her as we went along, to trust her sense of what she enjoys, because what she is making is evolving beautifully - she is not done with the necklace yet, but I am looking forward to the next time she comes over to finish up her necklace!

If THIS is what she picked she has an EXCELLENT sense of color and texture! :) I personally would have left out the crazy lace agate but used every other single thing you have here. To the faves!

Thank you, Labratbecky, Asia and Laud –

Becky, my friend didn’t pick these – she didn’t use any pearls, just some crazy lace and yellow moss agate, the copper/amber seed bead mix, and some topaz fire polished beads, but she still has a very beautiful necklace in the making, I’m so pleased for her, and hope she will enjoy her new necklace when she gets it completed! :)

Lynn, thank you – I finished my first year of national service as an Americorps member for Communities in Schools last year, and am completing my second – just updated my resume, and will be looking as the months go on – would like to do something different from the human service work I do now – instead, working with neighborhoods as a neighborhood liaison for instance.

And, yes it was a lot of fun, sharing my bead stash with my friend – she is a very special lady – she has been part of a year long effort to clean up and reorganize the owner’s section of the house I have my apartment in – she and her husband have both put in countless hours helping in so many ways, sorting stuff, hauling stuff to Goodwill, the dump and electronics recycling, on and on – they have helped me over a few weekends get my own place in order – so it was a pleasure that she asked to do this activity with me – we agreed we needed to do something fun together, rather than just house projects!

We laughed and laughed about how tiny those seed beads look, and how at first, when most beaders see ‘em, they shake their heads about how anyone could use ‘em without going blind, but as we go on… :)

And ladies, thanks so much for wanting to see pics of her finished necklace – I’ll check with her and her husband about what kinds of cameras they have – I have just an ordinary digital one, with an option for somewhat close in, and wide angle, but don’t know how close up it can photograph small objects like jewelry.
