“For the Bride & MOTB”

Description from EPBCornell: Some romantic bits & pieces I'm in love with.
My dear friend is finally getting married as she's turning 50 this year & I'm so happy so has met her match! She was going to be satisfied with a simple, small ceremony for just closest family, but her husband-to-be, having had 0 frills for his first (military) marriage, wants the whole hurrah. So, when COVID is finally contained and the population is vaccinated, that is what they are going to do. It's gonna be big & grand & fun will be had by all.
I debate myself whether to use silk or nylon to string pearls. I can be snobbish in my desire to use the premium natural or pure materials: sterling over silver plated (even solid pewter over silver plated), silk or linen over synthetic, gemstone over glass in some cases. But the superior durability & resistance to stretching & fraying have won me over for using nylon (with the built-in needle) or C-Lon (using a mixed dab of 5-minute epoxy to harden an inch or so of a taper-cut end) for stringing pearls-- especially if I'm adding in a similarly-sized glass or gemstone bead every few pearls for a little interest & sparkle.

Liz, your gorgeous wedding pick went right into my faves! I so agree with you about the pearl-knotting thread. I love love silk, but it is SO frustrating to finish a full strand of pearls only to have it stretch out on my mannequin. And even though I’ve pulled and pulled on it before knotting! :( LB’s thread has worked. Covid cases are on the rise in the midwest. And even though more people are getting vaccinated, my grown kids haven’t been able to get appointment. So they are still vulnerable! Those d@#n variants are increasing and really spreading because people are not patient enough to use their heads and be smart and hang in until we crush this thing. I’m sorry for the rant. But it’s personal. :(

Your pearls, especially the carved mop, are exquisite. Your bridal and mother of the bride pieces will be beautiful. Kathryn R- One of my daughters, who’s recovering from surgery, got on her computer and checked every vaccination venue until we all have had our first, or first and second, shots. I don’t know if that helps or not, but it got us in.

Thanks for your comments! I really love the new seed pearls, but I’d want about 20 strands of them together for full effect. At $7.90 a strand that’s like $170 with RI tax. I’m not sure my wedding dress cost much more than that. I’d stretch the strands a little by adding some 11/0 demi seed beads intermittently, but it would have to be mostly the pearls. Expensive, but, oh, would it be beautiful!
Kathryn: I’m with you. I wish people could be smarter & stay disciplined just a bit longer so the variants can’t get out of control. I’m less worried about the UK variant we have, because the vaccines are effective against it. I’m worried about more mutations that are possible the more new cases we have. The US may yet be the origin of a new variant worse than anything we’ve seen yet, and while the odds of it happening are very, very slim (say, like hitting the Powerball), the more cases we have, the better, or scarier, the odds get (like with Powerball tickets sold– enough tickets & eventually someone hits it). My husband gets very bent out of shape blaming China for COVID & wants them held responsible. He doesn’t understand why nothing has been done against them for it. I somehow feel it could just as well have originated here as there. Now I wonder could our undisciplined response to COVID-19 lead us to become responsible for the origin of a more deadly variant so different it becomes COVID-21, for which we have not yet developed effective vaccines. Even with our most vulnerable population vaccinated & fewer deaths likely with each new COVID case now, it is not safe. Every case is another opportunity for mutation into a new, viable, more deadly variant against which the vaccines may be ineffective. Another lottery ticket for a Powerball jackpot we do NOT want to hit. We still need to minimize the spread until everybody who can be vaccinated is vaccinated. Worldwide. I am still hopeful we will beat the virus mutating. The vaccine rollout seems to have accelerated and more people I know are getting their shots. I got my 1st a week ago here in RI & I’m 45. My parents in Maine were both fully vaccinated as of a month ago. Hoping things get better in Iowa & the rest of the Midwest, too.

Bless you, MH, for the tip. :) And Liz, thanks for the reality check. Key word: discipline. Something we humans by nature (worldwide) balk at and resist. :(
But as for the lovely wedding pearls, I wish LB could make available tiny round MOP or Shell Pearls. The 2 strands of 4mm ones I bought were so lovely and less expensive than freshwater. Liz, when you create something marvelous with your pearls, I’d love to see it!
