“Gem Chick's #100 - Heirloom”

Description from Jeannes Gems - Gem Chick: My grandfather's watch fob inspired this pick. I thought about selling it before I became so "crafty". Now I'd like to add something to it so that I can wear it. Any thoughts?

That’s my grandfather’s piece. I want to add to it so it’s wearable, but don’t know what to do.

    CAS says:

How about attaching a strand of beads to the ring above the fob, and using the fob chain clasp as part of the necklace clasp. Or better yet, entwine a strand of smallish beads around the fob chain, and have a strand of larger beads on the other side, with the fob as the pendant.

ah yes, doing several things at once… while chatting… yes I’m taking a couple of classes this summer, continuing to work part time too…

that’s quite a dilemma, it being your grandfather’s piece (oops, thought you had made it, now I understand your pick title)… what are you wanting to add to it? or change to make it more wearable???

    KPJEWELS says:

Great idea Jeanne. I don’t know much about Peyote Stitch but could you bead the chain with this stitch or perhaps some other beady stitch. Perhaps add a few dainty beads to the focal. It would be a shame to just hide it away, it is lovely. BTW so is your pick.

    KPJEWELS says:

Oops, forgot to say congrats on pick #100

I was thinking of keeping the chain as is and adding an “extender” piece with some sort of beads. The chain is pretty sturdy- about 4mm, but I like the idea of a string of small beads along side it. I was also thinking of maybe using the ring with a bar as a toggle and clasping it in the front. Just not sure what kind of beads

Great heirloom piece and congrats on #100!

  15. CAS
    CAS says:

How about making it a 4 generation thing, his birthstone, your Mom/Dad’s (I don’t know if it’s your Mom’s Dad or your Dad’s Dad) birthstone, your birthstone and Sam’s birthstone, and if/when Sam has children you can add their birthstones too. It would be a true heirloom then.

Christine – That sounds like a really good idea. We’d certainly have some beautiful stones – rubies (me), peridot (Dad) opal (Sam) or I just noticed that tourmaline is an alternate for October. I’ll have to check through Dad’s papers to see if there’s anything on my grandfather.

    Thank you ladies!

The chain is 14k. Not sure if you can see the alternating white and yellow gold. about and inch of each.

First, congrats on #100, Jeanne!!! This one is lovely and very special, too. Here’s to many more! :-)

Second, re: your design ideas. The alternating chain is lovely, so you don’t want to hide it. If you want to add a second strand alongside it, pearls are always a pretty and feminine choice without overwhelming the chain. I love the idea of adding on birthstones to make it a generational heirloom piece. You could add the actual stones or their corresponding colors in Swarovski crystals. Could the birthstones be hung by headpins from the large circle above the focal piece? Are those your grandfather’s initials in the focal piece? You want to be sure those aren’t covered up. Adding extender chain to the ends would allow you to wear it as a necklace and hand it down to Sam some day, too. What an amazing family treasure you have! :D

Jeanne, 100 Picks – Wow! I dream of that someday… This one is beautiful, and what a special piece to base it around! The watch fob is going to make an amazing pendant!

I like the birthstone ideas, as well as the asymmetrical look for the necklace. I don’t have too many ideas to add, but I would be careful about overpowering the pendant with filigree. I’m kind of partial to the Rose Column connector, or the Pewter Ribbon connector. I think the pearls are an excellent idea too, classy and classic. I wonder how the birthstones would look as the partner to the chain? Maybe with gold fill & ss rounds in between? Whatever you decide on I know this will turn out beautiful. Please share photos when you’re done!!! :)

I second that, Lori! Photos are a definite must when Jeanne is done with this project! :D

I love the way this is coming together and can’t wait till school’s out to work on it. You can see that I had pearls on the brain, probably small so as not to take away from the existing, amazing chain, love the idea of birthstones or crystals and I think think the ribbon connectors might work.
Thanks so much for all the input. I definitely will post pics. But don’t hold you breath. Summer vacation doesn’t start till June 28 and I’ve got a ton to do in between.

Last day is June 26. Sam graduates on the 28th. Long Island must be the only ones in the country that run that late.

Did your grandaughter just finish 1st grade? That’s my favorite grade. I’ve been there for about 15 years. They grow so much in that one year!
