“Harvest Time for Squirrels”

Description from puppychick labratbecky: We have 2 small walnut trees (20-30 feet tall), one right outside our bedroom window. They are both overflowing with walnuts and the squirrels have been madly harvesting for weeks. I see them do their laps of up the tree, grab 1 or 2, each run to their own special hidey-hole, and come back for more. One of them launches her(him? doubt it :) )self from a branch on the next tree, onto our roof, off the roof to the walnut, grab a green globe, launch back to the first tree, run down and across the yard. They even sit on the deck railing to rip them apart for a snack. We have 2 stumps in the yard that have served as dining tables and are littered in the outer green remains. I could watch all day!! :) !!

You can see why I am a little leery of outdoor cats. :)

Loving this, my squirrels have been hiding their stash in my deck gutters, have no idea what to do they clogging them, but on the other hand I don’t want to wreck their pantry :D

Becky i just knowed this was you!….so cute & that Green Girl pendant captures the activity you describe perfectly….no invading possums or kookaburras at the moment but sulphur-crested white cockatoos attacking succulents & making off with bromeliads & hanging baskets!….they are very naughty & cheeky: when you rouse they cock their head at you & listen, then fly off with an indignant defiant squawk!

Oh, to be in Australia! Wonderful, wonderful place.

Becky, we’re twinsies again. A young walnut in my backyard decided to fruit this year, so we have the green bombs, too. Problem is the squirrels here don’t seem to like them. We have to gather the nuts ourselves rather than hit them with the lawnmower. Maybe as fall progresses, the squirrels will get the idea?

Your pick? Well, of course, I love it!

franny–I’m like Laud–when can we come visit?? :)

Laud–it took the squirrels a couple of years to get the idea and now they even clean up the fallen fruit. It just takes time. :)

    Laud says:

Ah, well that explains it. This is the first year the tree has nuts.
