“Pele’s Realm”

Description from Kathryn R: The ancient Hawaiian goddess Pele (or Pelehonuamea) is called “She who shapes the sacred land.” She is known as the goddess of fire and volcanos and makes her home in the Kilauea volcano in the Big Island of Oahu. When lava flows down the mountainside into the sea, huge clouds of steam arise and the lava adds more to the island.

Congrats on your striking and informative POD! I only had a day trip on the Big Island of Hawaii about 30 years ago, we were staying in Honolulu on Oahu the rest of the week, but wish I had the whole week on the Big Island. The volcano is amazing and its activity both beautiful and sometimes desolate, with fields of lava and spindles of scorched tree trunks where lush landscapes were. We drove looking for a black sand beach we had seen in a postcard photo. Eventually we found it, or where it had been– overrun by lava. Houses that had been built across the road from the beach were still there, burned and abandoned. The lava stretched about 50 yards out beyond where the beach, that beautiful beach, once ended at the ocean’s edge. Such is life in Pele’s realm. Thank you for the chance to revisit old memories. Wonderful pick for the goddess of the Hawaiian volcano and her fiery dominion!

Thank you so much, Fellow Fresh Pickers! EPB Cornell, thanks for the wonderful though fearsome story of the land where Pele rules. My husband and I have been to Oahu once and to Maui twice, but never to the Big Island. My hope is someday to see the active volcanoes even from a distance. My pick is my vicarious visit to Kilauea.
