More about Tourmaline
Tourmaline is found in a variety of colors - colorless, pink, red, yellow, brown, green, blue, violet, black, and multi-colored. There are specific names associated with each color variation. The Dutch gave the name "Turamali" to this gemstone group "meaning stone with mixed colors".
Our tourmaline beads come in an array of beautiful shapes and colors. Pinks, greens, blues, purples, and browns, and black might all be found on a single strand of these gorgeous beads!
The ancient Egyptians called tourmaline rainbow rock, believing that the gemstone gathered all of the colors of the rainbow as it worked its way up through the earth. Its name comes from the Sri Lankan “tur mail”, meaning “multi-colored stone”.
Tourmaline is not a single mineral species, but a group of 14 different species including minerals such as schorl (black due to iron) and dravite (brown due to magnesium). Most gemstone quality tourmaline is lithium-rich elbaite, named after the Italian island of Elba where many good tourmaline crystals were once found. Lithium-rich tourmalines come in many different colors, including blue, green, red, yellow, and pink. Uniformly colored tourmaline crystals are quite rare - most show various tones in or even different colors within the same crystal.
