Whole Foods Hot Bar – Good or Evil?

Posted by Kevin on October 08 at 01:13 pm

Our office (The Lima Loft) is downtown. This means that we frequent the same places (see our favorites) for lunch each day. Occasionally though, I have to run errands that aren’t downtown. On these days, I bring my car and my choices for lunch are virtually limitless! Yesterday, I had finished my errands and it was time to start thinking about lunch.  I was near the new Whole Foods that everyone has been talking about, so I decided to check it out and try the hot bar. I’ve been trying to eat healthier lately and I knew they would have some great stuff.

For people that love food, walking into Whole Foods is like being a kid again and walking into Toys R Us. I think they arrange the fruits and vegetables by color – it’s like a work of art! My nose led me straight to the hot bar near the back of the store. I couldn’t believe the enormous selection. I’d be able to put a healthy, tasty lunch together for sure…

2 pieces of fried chicken, 1 sweet and sour meatball (just had to try it), and one heaping scoop of Mac ‘N Cheese later I was thinking, “How did this stuff get on my plate??!!” — It just looked so tasty, I couldn’t resist. I walked to the other end and made myself a small side salad for good measure.

I will say that the food was excellent. I was a little shocked when I got to the register and found out that my “quick lunch” with a bottle of water was over $14.00!  It’s definitely not cheap, that’s for sure. I’ll probably go back once in a while, but I’ll be sure to take Ali with me to pick out my food. Unlike me, she actually has some will power.

Overall, I recommend it. If you’re trying to eat healthy, bring your strength and plenty of cash!

Oh man! Whole Foods mac-n-cheese is sooo good! It’s a great way to fatten up so I can stay warm through the Michigan winter! :)

Love the food too, but the price was a BIG surprise @ the checkstand. Maybe we’re so busy looking @ goodies
we forget the charge is by weight!!

We miss the Whole foods so much! Downeast Maine just doesn’t have the population but in Boulder we loved it. The bakery is true and pure evil!

Here in New Hampshire we have Co-op Food Stores in my town, and they have something similar. The food is “too die for” good, but $$$$$$, as they too charge by weight. It’s great for an occassional splurge though (especially their chicken salad with grapes and dried cranberries, yum).

I love Whole Foods! Our closest one however, is in Palo Alto, somewhere between 70 and 90 miles from where I live in Oakdale, Ca., which is in the north-east end of the central valley at the mouth of the Sonoran Foothills. My husband and I have friends there, so whenever we visit we include a trip to Whole Foods. The array of organic foods and fresh produce is a treat. The prices are higher then regular foods, but not out of the ballpark for organic. We don’t usually buy prepared foods, so the sticker shock at the register isn’t too bad. We stock up on some items that can’t be found anywhere else. I wish we had one closer, but we do have Trader Joe’s half an hour away.

You all have my sympathies – just reading all the comments about Whole Foods’ seductively yummy selections reminds me of the location in downtown Seattle near my school Antioch University. I’ve gone a few times with some students from class and we do have to be careful as you’re saying with selections, esp. from the vast hot and cold foods bar so that we too don’t get unpleasantly surprised at checkout. The first time I spent $11 for a small box of food and a drink! Ah, the dilemma of trying to eat healthy and sustain my wallet! :)
