Scream Week: Fresh Pick Contest

Posted by Steve on October 25 at 01:56 pm

Hulk SmashPart of the fun of Halloween is to show off your creepy, creative ideas… from decorations to costumes to jewelry. If you’re feeling extra creepy this year, then this contest is for you! The rules are simple, and the prizes are sweet (even sweeter than junior’s Halloween candy).

Make a Fresh Pick and Win

Conjure up those ghost stories, costumes, and creepy color combos… and make a Fresh Pick to share them with everyone! We’ll pick 4 winners from the Fresh Picks submitted as a comment to this blog post (instructions are below). One winner will be chosen for each of these four themes:

  • Best Composition: The overall composition is one of the most important qualities of a beautiful Fresh Pick. Creating the best possible color & texture arrangement (with a Halloween theme, of course) is key to winning this category.
  • Coolest Costume: Were you a crayon? A princess? A robot? A superhero? Show off by making a Fresh Pick inspired by your costume idea. Sure, colors are important… but try and tell more about the costume through the items you choose.
  • Scariest Story or Poem: Everyone loves a good ghost story (*ahem* most of the time). We’ll read your description that you add to your Fresh Pick. It could be a scary story, a tale about your favorite childhood Halloween memory, a poem (that you write yourself), or pretty much any type of Halloween prose.
  • People’s Choice: We’ll total up the number of favorites that each Fresh Pick entry receives… and the one with the most favorites will be the People’s Choice winner! Make sure your vote is counted by going to the Fresh Pick and marking your favorites.

Now, for the important part… :)

Annie OakleyThe Prizes

The winner of each theme will receive a $25 Lima Beads gift certificate. You can use it to buy anything from our shop!

When you’re ready to submit your Pick, just select it from the drop-down menu in the comment form below. You’ll be able to choose from your 10 most recent picks. Choose the one that you’d like to submit to the contest and “Voila!” Not sure what a Fresh Pick is? Find out how to Design Your Own Fresh Picks!

Here are a few final ground rules before you get started:

  • There will be 3 submissions allowed per person. If you make more than that, only your most recent 3 will be counted. You don’t have to match your picks with the themes above–you can do all costumes, all stories, or a mix of everything. Just remember, 3 is the limit!
  • All Picks must be submitted as a comment on this blog post by Wednesday, October 31st at midnight.
  • You can win up to one gift certificate per person.
  • The Lima Beads team will pick the winners on Thursday, November 1. The People’s Choice winner will be selected by the number of favorites received. The winners will be announced here on the blog.

OK, get picking! Good luck!

    Thanks again!

I always loved the ‘romantic notion’ of the Haunted Hayride…however, I can’t remember ever being as scared as when the hayride slows to a crawl and some dude comes running toward the wagon w/ a chainsaw. Romance Over!! Give me Apple Bobbing & Smores any day!!

Hi Steve, I’m hoping you can help me fix some picks that are in my downloaded choices. There are 3 listed there that are not for the Halloween 2012 Promo (and I did not mark them as part of the promo), they are: “Sparrow’s World”, “Party!” and “Give A Hoot”. These 3 have nothing to do with the Promo or even Halloween. Thanks,in advance, for taking the time to help me correct the mistake. Beth

  19. Kristine S
    Kristine S says:

I hope I followed all the steps to enter the contest. I don’t need any bad juju today!

  20. Steve
    Steve says:

Hi Beth, I think I might be able to help. The picks in your menu are just the last 10 picks you’ve made… it’s just supposed to show you the recent ones so you can choose one or more recent ones to enter in the contest.

When you mark a pick as part of the “Halloween 2012″ promo, it will put it in the parade of scary picks on the Halloween page.

In other words, entering the Fresh Pick contest and marking your picks as part of the Halloween promo are two different things (even though they sound so similar). I will do a better job of explaining this next year :)

  21. Daisy Chick - Dawn
    Daisy Chick - Dawn says:

I am choosing this as my first submission to the contest. I amde up the poem due to the evil thought I have regarding the halloween costume I am making. I so wanted to take all the trims wrap it all in a ball and start scissoring it to bits. This is my method to relieve stress and give the costume a death by story.

The Headless Horseman is STILL searching! Under the darkest sky of the season, he searches through the tall trees and in each pumpkin patch. Back and forth through Sleepy Hollow he searches. Too bad he hasn’t searched in the spooky brown bog… because that’s where his head is waiting for him.

Who could resist a Halloween party at a castle? —–

It was a trick getting to the castle, past silent owls and leaves swirling into dust. A black cat in the trees warned with his citron eyes: “Don’t go in! Oh, don’t go in.”

Outside, we heard the clank of chains as the door creaked open. A shadow figure slithered away while we brushed cobwebs thick as clouds aside.

Ah, but a candle-lit chamber welcomed us to a feast of treats: pyramids of candy, glistening apples, pumpkin pastries, licorice ice. Party guests cried, “Happy Halloween!”

We stayed long past the witching hour, crossing the cemetery on our way home. The dead, back in their graves, watched us, wistful for just one more hour of the magical night.

  65. Lady425 Beth
    Lady425 Beth says:

I am a big fan of the Iron Man movies. In my costume pick I tried to illustrate the basic premise of the movies and the role of the main character, Tony Sparks, aka Iron Man.
Tony is the obessively brilliant computer genuis in controll of a weapons manufacaturing company. While doing a weapons demonstration in a war-torn country, he is captured and forced to design an elaborate escape.
I started my pick with the Lilly Pilly sheet, which to me looks like a bunch of computer chips, and C Koop gears to illustrate the necessary parts used to build the famous suit he creates to become Iron Man. The red and gold are the colors of the suit, and the Red Magnesite skull is the helmet. The Lipstick Revolver represents Tony’s involvement in the weapons industry. I used the Golden Pyrite along with Clear AB Czech glass as a way to show the source of power that eminates from the center of the chest on the suit. The PH Hand shows the delivery method. Lastly, the Green Girl Flying Heart represents both his abillity to fly anywhere, even breaking the sound barrier; and also the toxic effect the palatium (original element used to make the power) has on his physical body.

So I now present the Iron Man costume!

  66. T Tebeau
    T Tebeau says:

#2 entry reminds me of that silly song “Halloween spooks outside my window”. Where there are visions of ghosts & goblins and silly monsters hiding by the old tree, making faces and noises trying to scare someone. Halloween fun!

    Entry #3
“I want to be a cat for Halloween”

Over the years, I have dressed up as a cat several times. When I was small, my mom made me a cat costume. It was a one piece suit with a bonnet-like hat with ears. She didn’t have any black fabric to use, so it was navy and dark green. I loved it. Once when I was a teenager, I was a black cat. Put some ears on a headband, pin on a tail, draw some whiskers with an eyeliner pencil and voila! A black cat. Now, the tradition is that I wear a fuzzy leopard print headband with ears to take the boys trick-or-treating.

  85. D Gooding
    D Gooding says:

Posting this again only because I neglected to copy the poem:

    Max, the Black Cat

There once was a black cat named Max.
In manners he was very lax.
    He made children scream
    when on Halloween
he jumped out from under a fax.

He tugged at the sheets of a ghost.
He was not a very good host.
    He made the clown cry
and the witch yelled “Oh my!”
as he sharpened his claws on a post.

The candy he tossed to the floor.
And ran when they knocked on the door.
    He did not want out,
but he did make them shout.
    especially the kids under four.

The kids left with all of their loot.
To scold Max the point was just moot.
Cuz he jumped in my lap,
    took a ten minute nap,
and I told him “good thing you’re so cute!”

(Just a note: Yes, there really is a cat named Max. Yes, he is really full of mischief. Yes, I really do say “good thing you’re so cute” quite a bit. And I love him to pieces!)
