Scream Week 2013: Fresh Pick Contest

Posted by Kevin on October 24 at 03:14 pm

UPDATE: The winners have been announced!

We had another great Scream Week this year, and we hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did! We had to put some extra hours in the warehouse to pack up all the orders with free gifts… but it was all worth it. The last order of business for Scream Week 2013 was to tally up the votes for the Fresh Pick contest. Each winner will receive a $25 Lima Beads Gift Certificate, and we’ll be sending those out within 24 hours. Congratulations to all the winners! Without further adieu:

Best Composition Winner: Hocus Pocus by SaruHime. We loved the colors, variety, and overall balance of this spooky & sparkly pick. It cast a spell on us!

Coolest Costume Winner: Gypsy Queen by Gail Layne. This costume is nothing short of mesmerizing in our minds. The gold and glass, along with the ribbon and chain, really paint the picture of a gypsy queen.

Story or Poem Winner: Twas the night of Halloween by Beadzilla aka Wanda. We loved the spooky twist on this classic poem, and the irony of the bat being the good guy! And I’m sure all the parents out there have had a good scare when thinking about unwrapped treats or chaos in the streets.

People’s Choice Winner: Jack’O by Gina P – Delta Chick. This take on the classic Halloween symbol won over the hearts (and favorites) of beaders around the world. It’s no surprise to us–we love it, too!

Congrats again, and thanks so much to all the pickers out there who made this possible! Until next year… ;)

Below is the original text announcing the contest…

Happy Pumpkin DayThe Halloween Fresh Pick contest was a lot of fun last year, so we’re doing it again! Read below for details or check out last year’s contest for ideas!

Part of the fun of Halloween is to show off your creepy, creative ideas… from decorations to costumes to jewelry. If you’re feeling extra creepy this year, then this contest is for you! The rules are simple, and the prizes are sweet (even sweeter than Twizzlers).

Make a Fresh Pick and Win

Conjure up those ghost stories, costumes, and creepy color combos… and make a Fresh Pick to share them with everyone! We’ll pick 4 winners from the Fresh Picks submitted as a comment to this blog post (instructions are below). One winner will be chosen for each of these four themes:

  • Best Composition: The overall composition is one of the most important qualities of a beautiful Fresh Pick. Creating the best possible color & texture arrangement (with a Halloween theme, of course) is key to winning this category.
  • Coolest Costume: Were you a crayon? A princess? A robot? A superhero? Show off by making a Fresh Pick inspired by your costume idea. Sure, colors are important… but try and tell more about the costume through the items you choose.
  • Scariest Story or Poem: Everyone loves a good ghost story (*ahem* most of the time). We’ll read your description that you add to your Fresh Pick. It could be a scary story, a tale about your favorite childhood Halloween memory, a poem (that you write yourself), or pretty much any type of Halloween prose.
  • People’s Choice: We’ll total up the number of favorites that each Fresh Pick entry receives… and the one with the most favorites will be the People’s Choice winner! Make sure your vote is counted by going to the Fresh Pick and marking your favorites.

Now, for the important part… :)

Boo!The Prizes

The winner of each theme will receive a $25 Lima Beads gift certificate. You can use it to buy anything from our shop!

When you’re ready to submit your Pick, just select it from the drop-down menu in the comment form below. You’ll be able to choose from your 10 most recent picks. Choose the one that you’d like to submit to the contest and “Voila!” Not sure what a Fresh Pick is? Find out how to Design Your Own Fresh Picks!

Here are a few final ground rules before you get started:

  • There will be 3 submissions allowed per person. If you make more than that, only your most recent 3 will be counted. You don’t have to match your picks with the themes above–you can do all costumes, all stories, or a mix of everything. Just remember, 3 is the limit!
  • All Picks must be submitted as a comment on this blog post by Thursday, October 31st at midnight.
  • You can win up to one gift certificate per person.
  • The Lima Beads team will pick the winners on Friday, November 1. The People’s Choice winner will be selected by the number of favorites received. The winners will be announced here on the blog.

OK, get picking! Good luck!

My costume is for a Pirate. His name is Edgar, and his heart is black as night.
The face represents the mask. The feather is for his hat. On his shoulder sits his trusty parrot, Poe.
On his side he wears his sword. For directions he uses a broken compass.
His ship is called the Black Water. It is manned by zombies in chains. The rope is for the ship. He flies the Pirate Skull Flag.
He sails the seas to plunder for treasure – which he keeps under lock and key.

    BeadsforFun says:

When I was growing up the most told scary story was “Bloody Fingers”. It was about a family camping trip in the woods. After dinner one night the Grandfather of the group comments on the fact that the area they are in is haunted by an elderly man that worked his fingers to the bone building the railroad that passed by where they were camping. He had died in a tragic accident while working on the railroad. Later that night, everyone was woke to the sound of someone chanting “bloody fingers, bloody fingers”!! Everyone was so scared they barely slept. The next night the same haunting chant was heard again! Bloody Fingers! Bloody Fingers! Everyone was so scared!! Suddenly, the youngest child in the group grabs a box of bandaids and tosses them in the woods stating, “Got bloody fingers, put a bandaid on them!” And they never heard the ghost again! :-) Of course the story was changed and could be made longer, but the ending was always the same. Scary at first but funny in the end! Happy Halloween!!!

    Barb F says:

Why are the colours orange and black the traditional Halloween colors?
There are a lot of opinions.
One of them is that orange represents the color of pumpkins, which of course are a traditional Halloween decoration (especially if carved), and black represents the dark spirits which supposedly come forth on All Hallow’s Eve(the name of which Halloween is an abbreviation).
Jack-o-lanterns trace back to the Irish myth of Stingy Jack who died and, finding himself rejected by both heaven and hell, was forced to roam the darkness seeking a resting place for his soul. Legend has it that he hollowed out a turnip and used it to carry a coal to light his way. This said, the first Jack-o-lanterns were carved in turnips, and only changed to pumpkins when the tradition was brought to America.

The cold, bright moon shines down on Mr. Owl. Mr. Owl is very wise and he knows what happens tonight and so he is sitting in the very top of his favorite tree. The very top where he’ll be safe from all that happens in a graveyard on Halloween at midnight. The witching hour, when all the spirits come forth to wreak havoc on anyone unwise enough to be out and about at this ungodly hour. When ghosts may suddenly appear out of a dark corner or the undead could arise from the cold, damp ground. So be wise like Mr. Owl and beware the witching hour. Happy Halloween All

She look up at the calendar-
    Halloween! Already? Who knew??
What should she be when she hands out her treats?
    Poor Aggie hadn’t a clue.
Just then outside in the dog pen
    Her Baskerville Hound sang aWOoooo.

The purple witch comes out on Halloween with all her friends and prowls about looking for children to get nearby but not for them to see her and her “friends.”

They often sense her and look about afraid of what they might see or they cling to a mom or dad.

Alas all too soon the night moves on to the tall teen ghosts and goblins and its time for her and her friends to vanish for the night

  53. Granny Nancy
    Granny Nancy says:

Among the reasons for the night I think we can agree, the achieved candy treasure is indeed the purpose of Halloween for our little ones.

Vampire movies, TV shoes and books has certainly been the rage and why not. Their legend has been around for a very long time. So here’s to the vampires and to all that are fascinated by them. Cheers!

    Vampire Kiss Martini

3 oz. Chilled Pinnacle “Whipped” Vodka or Vanilla Vodka
    Strawberry Sundae syrup
Red Candy Sugar or Red Jello
Plastic vampire teeth as a garnish

Rim a martini glass with the strawberry syrup. Drizzle some on the inside of the glass so it drips. Dip in sugar or jello. Chill in the freezer. Pour vodka into a shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into prepared martini glass. Add teeth on the side of the glass as a garnish.

For best results, prepare your glasses ahead of time and freeze them with the sugar and syrup on them. Remove from freezer just before serving.

There once was a black cat named Max.
In manners he was very lax.
    He made children scream
    when on Halloween
he jumped out from under a fax.

He tugged at the sheets of a ghost.
He was not a very good host.
    He made the clown cry
and the witch yelled “Oh my!”
as he sharpened his claws on a post.

The candy he tossed to the floor.
And ran when they knocked on the door.
    He did not want out,
but he did make them shout.
    especially the kids under four.

The kids left with all of their loot.
To scold Max the point was just moot.
Cuz he jumped in my lap,
    took a ten minute nap,
and I told him “good thing you’re so cute!”

    A cautionary cat tail…

A black cat caught a flying bat
    much to the bats chagrin
And soon became a kitty toy
in a game he could not win
Back and forth he was tossed from paw to paw
at a mind rattling dizzying rate
Monsieur cat was fast but not fast enough
the bat made his move and the cat was too late
But even so he left his mark
for the bat had been ill used
Made to look quite the fool was the poor little bat
not to mentioned battered and bruised!

Years ago, when my now 20-something year old nephews were little, I used to make their Halloween costumes for them. I made mice, pigs, bats, ghosts and dragons of various kinds, but one of my most challenging was the year I was asked to make “a glorious beetle Aunt Chris” and a ladybug. I had no idea what a “glorious beetle” was, so my sister sent me a picture of one. Of course I couldn’t find a pattern for one, or for any kind of insect that year, so I had to make up my own. He loved it, to this day it’s still one of his favorite costumes from childhood.

Here’s my “Gypsy Queen” costume. The rock crystal is her crystal ball. The Sari Silk is her skirt and the silk ribbon is her blouse. Everything else is her wonderful blingy jewelry!

    “Dark Angel” NEW!
    by Ali B on 10/31/13

Description from Ali B: My 9 year old daughter told me that she wanted to dress up as a “Dark Angel” – a good angel who just likes to wear black. She was lovely with black wings, a black burnt velvet long gown, teal lace long sleeves and additions of purple and some pink. This was my interpretation of the total look.

My first two Halloween fresh pics were a bit on the creepy side so for the third and final one I switched things up and focused on the fun – Halloween masks and tasty candy treats. Yum!

And my third was for love of laughter. Yikes..is that, oh, no….just cuz laughing is better for you than candy…that said I going to have some candy and laugh at the scales.
