I've been wanting to make a simple multi strand necklace to wear this summer, but didn't want to just string the beads and be done. Then I remembered a bracelet I had made last summer and thought, hmmm… Then, my glass pebbles multi-strand necklace was born. I chose a dominant color, a couple accents and a couple splashes. It was also important to mix the sizes to keep things free.

Supplies you’ll need:

  • 35 beads or 7 strands (5 beads per strand) Recycled Glass Flat Freeform 21-23x18-20mm
  • 27 beads or 5 strands (6 beads per strand) Recycled Glass Flat Freeform 15x13-15mm
  • 24 beads or 1 strand recycled glass round 6mm
  • 15' or around 5 yards of Irish waxed linen in color A, cut into 3 equal lengths
  • 15' or around 5 yards of Irish waxed linen in color B, cut into 3 equal lengths
  • 1 toggle clasp

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1

With a multi strand necklace, layout is very important. You want to make sure that the placement of your beads on the different strands are complimentary to each other.

Step 2

Now that you have your layout decided, cut 3 5' lengths of each of your 2 selected waxed linen colors. Match up opposing colors and tie together in an overhand knot just off center. We are going to start with the outer strand of beads, beginning our stringing from the center and working out. Take your first bundle of waxed linen, string on a bead from the center of the outer strand that you laid out using just one of your cords. Pull the bead up to the knot. Bring the other cord around the bead and secure the bead in place by gathering both cords and making an overhand knot at the edge of the bead. Repeat this until you have used all your beads for that strand on one side, then move to the other side of that strand beginning at the center again.

Step 3

I chose to use round beads at the back to finish of my necklace because they gather up nicely and I didn't want anything too bulky at the back. String and knot the beads in the same way as explained in step 2.

Step 4

Gather all 3 strands, making sure that the end beads are even with each other. Create an overhand knot up to the beads. Make another overhand knot next to that one.

Step 5

Attach your toggle bar and ring to the waxed linen. Make sure that the toggle bar fits through the toggle ring before tightening down your knots. Waxed linen is almost impossible to untie once you secure your knots :-)
