Etching Copper - Help!

About this design:

Ok so here's the deal...I need some suggestions on what to write. I want to dangle another rectangle with writing on it from my rectangle with the cityscape on it. So what should I stamp???? Something about the city or something? I have no idea what to do!

btw: and the second picture is the first piece I tried to etch...I completely forgot I had it in the ferric chloride and the ferric chloride kinda ate the copper piece for dinner :( :)

(sorry for the poor quality camera isn't working so I had to use my ipod and that doesn't take good pictures in bad light...and it happens to be cloudy today)!

Copper metal, ferric chloride

First of all, I love the etching on it so far!
And I love your idea for this piece! :-D

I think something simple and trendy for the bottom piece. Unfortunately, not being a city girl, I have no idea what that could be. :-(
You’ll come up with something fantastic though, I’m sure!

Thank you for showing us the little “oops”! For me, it’s a great reminder that mistakes are really learning experiences and that we’re not alone in making them. We all do it! ;-)
    Keep up the great work!

Nicole, I love your city etching! Now, being from the greatest city in the world, I would put an “I Love NY” on your bottom piece! But, that’s being biased!!! I’m sure you’ll think of something!
    ” Metropolis”; ” Hometown Baby” ; “Metal Scape”;
” We Do Things Big”, etc. As you can see I’m getting carried away… sorry

Love this idea and your skyline design is perfect for a city-themed pendant, Nicole! :D

Hmmmmm If you’re going for an older crowd — “Sex and the City” or “Hot Child in the City.” If you’re going for a younger crowd — “Bright Lights, Big City.” 8)

Mary is soooo right — we really do learn from our mistakes — though you might be able to still do something fun & funky with that piece! :D

Love the pendant. I’m showing my age again because the first thing I thought of was “Downtown”. It’s an old song from the late 50′s by Petula Clark. It was my favorite back then.

I remember “Down Town” too. : ) I like all the suggestions so far … any of them would work. And the city scape is awesome.

I can’t come up with a suggestion for your citiscape piece, but I do love the “ruined” piece. I think it would look smashing soldered to a fresh piece of copper. Don’t know if I would add a bead or not – would make that decision as the piece progressed. :)

I think your heart will tell you what to put on that pendant! You are very talented! :)

    CAS says:

Lovely piece and wonderful idea Nicole. You could do a whole series of “I love ____ “, take one of the great ideas already given, or go with something else. I’ve thought of “skyline”, “peace & brotherhood”, “high rises” …

    I too remember “downtown”.

This is cool. I love the city… I am not from the city, but do like to visit them… Maybe put some kind of compass lettering or symbol ?

The first thing I thought of was, “Bright Lights, Big City. What about, Uptown Girl? Great job on the etching, canit wait to see the finished piece

All great suggestions for a stupendous pendant. (Yes, I remember “Downtown” and Pet Clarke singing it on Ed Sullivan. :) ) Love the concept, love your work. How about adding a Sun to the etching and calling it “Summer in the City” (back of my neck, gettin’ dirt and gritty.) You could expand a whole line to do the skylines of individual cities and customize them with the “I (heart)(City)” suggested above. LOTS of possibilities here.

Oh and Lynn g: love the idea of putting a compass on a pendant…then maybe dangle something like “you are never too far away from home” or something to that effect!!! thanks for the idea!!!

The lyrics: ‘hot time, summer in the city..’ poped into m head when I saw it (also mentioned by lyric Chick) – great summer song!

I also love the ‘eaten up piece – sowld look great coupled with something else, as suggested… steam-punkish, post apocalyptic feel…

    Hi Little Chick,
Glad you liked the idea. Here’s another. Do an “Emerald City” scape and have the tag read “There’s No Place Like Home”.

  19. C Strecker
    C Strecker says:

Nice etch job! How about “the Big Apple” or “city nights”. Add a patina to both pieces and use a burnisher to rub out the etched parts. You could also etch the lower piece with small alpha stamps for the name or use 4mm gauge metal alpha stamps with a simple font. just some ideas for you…. Be sure a post the finished project! good luck

Thanks girls!!!! I’ve been SOOO busy this summer…I definitely have to finish this piece and will post pics when it’s done!!! I’ve gotten so many good ideas from your comments!!! And speaking of patina, I need to buy some liver of sulfur!!!!!!!!!!! 8O

  21. C Strecker
    C Strecker says:

There are so many different patinas you can use. Rio Grande makes some great patinas – especially for copper and brass. Also check out Sculpt Nouveau website. You can even make your own patina for verdigris (that green color that happens when copper ages) and blue patina. These are awesome on brass and copper!
