Nature's Wonder

About this design:

I love fossils, any kind. I purchased this ammonite from a local bead store. It did not have a hole and so, this is my first attempt at wire wrapping. I wanted the wire to enhance the ammonite rather than cover it up. Also, the rock these pieces are laying on is a spiral shell fossil we found at a lake my mom used to live near. The ammonite is about two inches wide, so you can tell how big that rock is. Too bad I can't wrap that and wear it!

Ammonite pendant wrapped in sterling silver wire. Different sizes of round River Rock beads. The Ammonite and River Rock were purchased from a local bead shop. Fossil Coral chips, Citrine, Moonstone purchased from LB.

Tara, your wire wrapping enhanced the fossil rather than detracted from it! This is a great piece!

Thank you Sali Jo, Valentine Chick, & K H. If you look real close, you will see that I scratched the wire a bit and the back doesn’t look so hot. I do appreciate all your comments and encouragement.

It’s very easy to stratch or gouge the wire – that’s why they make nylon jawed pliers. You can always use a little tape to cushion your pliers and discourage the gouging. As for the back, we can’t see it while you are wearing it. Unless you put it into a juried art fair there is no reason to show and tell. I think you should be very proud of what you accomplished here.

  16. Chicky Bear-Tara
    Chicky Bear-Tara says:

Thank you KH, for the advice and the lesson. I didn’t know there were nylon jawed pliers. I’ll have to look for some. I really do appreciate your compliments.

I got the nylon jawed pliers at JoAnns/JoAnn’s Fabrics. If on their mailing list, you get one coupon each month in their flyer, for 40% off. While I only get to their store a few times a year, I did use their coupon for 40% off the pliers. On my first wire wrapping, not only scratched the stone, but almost broke the wire when pulling it to cover the back of the stone. Live and learn! Your set looks fabulous.

Tara, this set looks amazing!!! I love the colors you’ve combined to go with that stunning ammonite focal piece! Your wirewrapping is lovely! Don’t point out your boo-boos to people when they are looking at the piece in person — just let them admire it and, hopefully, buy it!!! ;-)

I’ve come close to selling “off my neck” — so far, not yet. I keep thinking I’m not hanging out around the right people! LOL

OH Ho Ho! What a beauty!
Everything. I mean everything about this is eye candy for me!!
You did a great job for your FIRST wire wrapping!
And the stones you chose are perfect. Are you sure you want to sell it?! Looks like a keeper to me. ;-)

Thanks KH for the tip on pliers! I’m going to have to find me a pair.

  24. Happy Chick aka Harriet
    Happy Chick aka Harriet says:

Ladies, they also sell those pliers at some Michaels and Hobby lobby stores. I got mine using a coupon too! LOL

Btw. I have used these nylon jawed pliers to smooth out wire that has gotten bent or a little crimped. Apply a little pressure and gently pull the wire or head pin through closed jaws of the pliers, and you can salvage wire you might have had to discard.

Still love the ammonite design, and the wire work only enhances it. :-)

  25. Leigh D
    Leigh D says:

You can also use this awesome stuff called “Tool Magic”. You dunk your pliers in this and let it dry – it doesn’t take all that long and waalaa you have nylon coated pliers – I like this stuff because I have a set of tools that I have grown accustomed to and love – this also prevents having to buy a whole other set of pliers. When you are done with wireworking you can just peel the stuff off your pliers! A jar of it runs about 5 bucks and lasts forever (just make sure that the lid is on tight!)

  26. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

Thanks, Leigh! I’ve seen it advertised and wondered how it worked! Good info! :D

Like Harriet, I use mine to also straighten out the kinks in wire and head pins. :D

  27. Happy Chick aka Harriet
    Happy Chick aka Harriet says:

Leigh, who carries the “Tool Magic”? I might like to have some. ;)

  28. Happy Chick aka Harriet
    Happy Chick aka Harriet says:

Btw. I BROKE a favorite pair of Beadsmith pliers 2 nights ago. I was flat crimping and squeezed down, like I have about a million times before, and the handle broke off. ( I think it was the million times before that did it.) I got a new pair, but feel bad about my old ones. They were the only ones I ever had that were magnetic. The new pair are from the same company, and look just the same, but are not magnetic. Oh, well, sigh,…goodbye old friends. :-(

Thank you Mary. I haven’t sold any of my jewelry yet and have spent so much on beads and supplies…my credit card is getting up there. I really don’t want to sell it, but may have to. I can make another. Actually, I should make another and sell it instead….hmmm….
Leigh, thank you for the advice and I will have to look for that stuff too. Where do they sell it?

  30. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

Harriet, I’ve never broken pliers before — yet. LOL I have gone through a couple of pairs of cutters. I didn’t even know they made magnetic pliers — wow! Very cool!

I’ve seen Tool Magic on various websites, such as FMG. I wonder if they sell it at HL and Michael’s. Hmmmm Have to check this out.

  31. Leigh D
    Leigh D says:

I got it originally from a local bead store – but I have seen it on FMG website and several of the other online bead sites – I would have to do a search to be more specific as to the other places…

What a piece of art you’ve made, Tara! It inspires me to make something with the ammonite pendant that I have. It’s a finished pendant that doesn’t need wrapping, luckily, cause that’s not something I have done before. You did great with yours!

  35. Chicky Bear-Tara
    Chicky Bear-Tara says:

Thank you Wenche. I’m glad I could inspire you. I am wearing these pieces today….so far no comments at all….:( but the pendant lays really nicely and stays in it’s place. It is not too heavy and nice to wear. Please post yours when you are done. Someone else had an ammonite pendant awhile back….I’m thinking it was Leigh!

  36. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

Yes, Leigh had a beautiful one, also! :D

I checked on FMG’s site and they sell Tool Magic for $6.58/2 oz. It’s the only size available. That’s their “highest” price — could be lower with the assortable pricing. Say, if we all get together and order it…..LOL

  37. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

I can’t believe no one has commented on this stunning set that you’re wearing today, Tara!!! Some days are just like that…. I’ll wear what I think is a killer piece and no one says a word. I’ll throw on something that is very simple and basic and people fall all over themselves complimenting me. Go figure. LOL

  38. Chicky Bear-Tara

I stopped by the neighborhood bead shop on the way home tonight and invested in a jar of tool magic. It comes in 2 colors (white and blue) and was in the same area with the wire and pliers. Several of the clerks spoke highly of it, and said that the product wears well and then you dip again. It’s certainly cheaper than investing in all new pliers.

  44. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

Thanks for the update/info, KH!!! What color did you get? LOL How much does it cost compared to online?

  45. No Photo
    K H says:

I bought the white. The white was in a j-peg pack and at least some of the directions are printed on the packaging, making it easier to read. The blue didn’t have packaging, and the instructions on the bottle are in little-itsy-bitsy-teensy-tiny print. 2 oz (100 applications) was $7.98. Mail order is cheaper, if you don’t count the shipping and handling.

  46. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

Well, the mail order is cheaper, but (like you said) you have S & H, plus the WAIT! LOL

And you kow, this particular bead shop does a lot of nice things for the community – They collect food for the neighborhood pantry and pet supplies for the animal shelter and they support several other charitable organizations throughout the year. Plus, they demo products and techniques almost every Saturday and they are always willing to give advice and counsel when their customers need it.

  48. Lynn Eileen Chicky LE
    Lynn Eileen Chicky LE says:

I don’t mind paying the slightly higher prices for come things at my LBS, either, because they are a lot like yours, KH. They also support local charities, donate items for fundraisers, and are always willing to help with projects/questions that any beader might have! They have a great selection and monthly specials, and if they don’t have what you want, they’ll special order it for you and it’s there within a week. If the classroom isn’t in use, anyone is welcome to come and bead there. They’ll even let you use their tools at no cost! You can use their kiln for only $5, no matter how many items you manage to fit into it! LOL They have wonderful, fun classes — and if you’ve already taken the class, you can take it again for free!!! I’ve never before found such wonderful, generous women running a business!!! :D

This jewelry ensemble is gorgeous. I love the ammonite pendant and agree the wire wrap is wonderful. Keep up the great work. By the way did you make another to sell and keep this one or did you sell this one?

  52. Chicky Bear-Tara
    Chicky Bear-Tara says:

    Hi Faith,

Thank you for your compliments. I did keep this one. It was my first attempt at wrapping…I didn’t even know how to do it, just did it how I thought it should be for this. I love it. I’m so glad the LB got ammonite for us. I can make some earrings and another necklace. I’m glad you took a look and happy that you like it. Thanks again.
