Aluminum Texturing

About this design:

Started a fantastic jewelry making class through the local adult school. It meets in a high school art class outfitted with the most amazing tools and machines for jewelry making. They NEVER had anything like this when I was in school (thanks for not making any jokes here). These earrings were textured by running pieces of aluminum sheet metal through a rolling mill with a piece of lace. Cut out simple shapes with kitchen shears. Filed, sanded, polished, and domed a bit. Added a "paint patina" and finally, a coating of satin varnish. Handmade ear wires from silver plated wire.

Aluminum sheet metal, sterling silver plated wire, Czech glass beads

These are great! I took a class like yours a long time ago, and then forgot all about it. I wonder if you can achieve the same effect with something like a Bigkick? Hmmm. May have to try it.

Ditto what Rowdy said! Was it hard to get that rondelle over the ear wire? I can’t seem to find the right size and shape of wire to achieve that look.Sooooo pretty!

Thanks for all the feedback on these earrings. Yes, I feel very lucky to have access to this incredible jewelry workshop. Many students take the class repeatedly just to have this access and bring their own projects to work on.
Hi, Nancy…regarding the beads on the ear wires. I made them with 20 gauge silver plated wire. So, small loop first, add the bead, shape the curve. Lightly hammer the curve for strength and to keep the bead in place. Does that make sense?

    Fresh Baked says:

Hi, ladies! Good question. No design on the backs, but I did brush them well with steel wool, so they have a satin brushed metal finish.
