The Long Goodbye

About this design:

After Laud made her fabulous necklace with this focal and we all saw that they were sold out, I came across one I had hidden in my stash! This pendant has always reminded me of the abandoned farmsteads you see sprinkled across the open, rolling plains of the Dakotas. I wanted to give this that feel-a melancholia for a forgotten time and forgotten lives, the Autumn of the farmstead's life. I double wrapped the tourmaline and used the rough cut stones to evoke a feeling of deterioration and abandonment. Originally there was a third, shorter strand of antique silver rolo chain woven through with a sunflower colored silk ribbon but I thought it was too much going on. I hope I decided correctly.

Earthenwood pendant, Antique Soocho Jade, Green Tourmaline in smooth and rough cut nuggets, Artistic wire, antique silver plated jump rings, Czech glass rondelles, all LB. Oak leaf, acorn, and bird charms, toggle, antique silver plated spacers and beads, flex wire, seed beads, all my stash.

What a great inspiration for the necklace – - and it does evoke that feeling of nostalgia in the empty plains. You have the right amount “going on” here – - definitely agree with you that a third strand would detract from the statement the necklace makes. Great work, Becky !

Thanks, Paula! And thanks for the opinion. I struggled with this for an entire weekend but I think I am happy with it now finally. :)

Nancy Mc says: sure did express yourself well in this piece. It’s jaw droppingly beautiful. I can see that this piece is a labor of love. The Tourmaline nuggets represent the abandoned bulding perfection. Your instinct of removing the 3rd strand was right,IMO. It’s perfect just the way it is.

Omg I love this! That house pendant is so awesome! I always wanted it in red, but never did get it. My loss :( It’s so well put together from the color mixture to the layers and all the little charms and findings. Beautiful Becky!

This is so lovely. Where did you find the round beads you use in the outside strand? It leaves the inside strands with the pendant so awesome. Its perfectly designed I think. Up here in the north, we used to have a lot of farming and now there are deserted barns all over the place.

    Awesome piece Beck.

Becky, this is just beautiful! You did a great job capturing your inspiration. I agree a third strand may have been overpowering.

It’s very sad to our the farmsteads go, and a mistake on our government’s part. If we cannot produce our own food, then we will become dependent on others for our subsistence, and that is not what we want….

Awesome awesome work Becky. Your necklace totally depicts the story you are trying to tell. Like Susie I agree the loss of farmsteads is the fault of the government. Our farmers know how to farm but the government stepped in and told them what, when, where & how much. They even pay them not to. And big corporations like Monsanto (evil) developed GMOs, terminator seeds, and refuse to let farmers save seeds.
Here’s a sad fact…even thoufh we think we are more environmentally aware now we actually waste 50% more food than we did in the 70′s.
    Okay off the soap box.

Me, too, Laud! If only they hadn’t been so pricey at the beginning. I must have bought that one during a sale early on because I couldn’t even remember doing so!
