August at the Lake

About this design:

I spent a lot of summers on Lake Huron--pale sky, beach dotted with tufts of grass, weathered raft, swallows darting at water's edge to catch insects. The water was cool blue-green with sparkles on a sunny day. This is my attempt to recapture that place.

Amazonite ovals, lampwork glass, pineapple jasper, Czech glass, wood jasper(?), blue impression jasper, teal impression jasper, aquamarine, antique brass focal and clasp

Laud, I always admire your designs, but this may just be my favorite one yet ! You have indeed captured the feeling of a Great Lakes beach, especially how the hazy sunlight can give the landscape a weathered look on some days – - the overall effect is stunning.

    Laud says:

Thank you! I worked on this one nearly all summer, but the right combination of elements eluded me. One wondrous stone I inherited looks exactly like a wave. I kept trying to incorporate it, but the scale was wrong. I tried a sand dollar, but this piece isn’t about salt water. So, so…what to do? I tried the bird, and that was it.

Perfect! Love the rectangle wood-ish beads. They’re reminiscent of an old rowboat bobbing alongside a weathered dock.

Yes the weathered dock plays an important part of my past. When my boys were very young we visited my husband’s grandparents in Maryland. It was my first trip to the south. They lived on a river in a very old house that I just loved. Even when we’d stay with my MIL, we’d walk down to the dock and swim and have such a good time. But kids grow up and we get old and all we have left are memories. This made me cry but they’re good tears for wonderful days gone by. PS: The necklace is exquisite – I love it.
