Dread Wrap

About this design:

My cousin messaged me the other day and asked me if I made Dread Wraps. My response was "I don't even know what that is..." Apparently, kids in my area (or all over, I have no idea) give themselves a single Dreadlock and then they wrap them with wire and beads and such. So she asked if I could make one for her step-daughter for her senior pictures. This is the result

copper wire, red wire, czech glass pressed daisy beads.

Never heard of them either… I could be the first here, heehe! Or maybe I just haven’t noticed, or met the wrong people — I’ve seen some dreadlocks, but guess I havent stopped to count them…
Very beautiful wrap, makes one want to persuade someone to get one of those dreadlocks, so it could be decorated! She will be thrilled!

Thanks Monica! I know up here we have a festival called Mountain Jam, and I’m sure that inspires some of the style for these kids. I never take notice of peoples dreads either…
I sent her pictures and her step-daughter loves it! She may order a few more ;)

Funky is the word that comes to mind but not in a bad way. I think I’ll do some research to see if anyone would like this. Dreadlocks seem to be the trend at some of our local high schools and colleges. (I guess old dogs do learn new tricks :)

BTW when I was in HS, Blondie was popular and I put pink streaks in my bangs. So I can’t judge what kids do now.

Thank you maxnbuttons. I can’t remember any trends from when I was in high school (which was only 10 years ago for me). It is kind of cool to be asked to do something like this, it is definitely not something I would have thought of on my own. I’m glad you were inspired :D

This is so cool! I have never seen them before, but I think they are a great idea for dressing up those locks. Very creative with your design and I love the daisies. Did your cousin give you a description to work with and specific measurements? Nice job! :)

Thank you CC!!! She wasn’t quite sure what to make. She just kind of described what they were and I googled them. She sent me a picture of her dress too and said “The only requirement is that there be NO PINK OR YELLOW” Apparently she hates those colors. Her dress had bright red flowers, so I figured this would match ;)

I haven’t heard of that either, but your design is stunning! I am wanting to make a hair piece for my upcoming wedding. I am just starting with beading, so am kinda unsure if I can pull it off…
