Ugly Ducklings

About this design:

Anyone who knows me knows that I adore pearls. There have been some ugly weird pearls on the wall of my LBS forever and a day...They're just not that attractive. Their color is rather dark, and they don't have much luster. The shapes are inconsistent. What could anyone do with these? Well, make a multistrand necklace and add pops of color to brighten them up! I added a pic of the plain strands below so you can see what I'm talking about.

Ugly duckling pearls. Lots of different gemstones, seed beads, copper cones, copper toggle clasp.

You certainly transformed those ugly duckling pearls into a winning necklace! The pops of color added interest and the copper accents top it all off. Well done!

Love what you did to transform those dark, lusterless pearls into a sweet necklace. I especially love that you used the copper cones and toggle clasp. Very pretty!

That’s a great way to use those lower grade pearls: turning a disappointment into a treasure! Cool necklace… and those CONES!

This is such a cool way to use those pearls. Nice mix of interesting colors and I think those cones are especially beautiful.

I love how you took it from duh to wow! The copper was wise because it helped bring out the copper that was in the pearls and the colors gave it life!

Ugly ducking into a swan! Everyone deserves to shine and you made that happen with this design!

I know how disappointing it is to receive icky, dull pearls, especially when the picture presents them as nice! I have many of those. You had a great idea for dressing them up. I’m going to experiment with dyeing some. I tried one batch & they are a bit better. Of course dyeing doesn’t bring back luster but…not much is known, or at least shared, about pearl dyeing. So I’ll put my mad scientist hat on & see!

I actually think those pearls are beautiful. The pops of colors, and metal accents make this a winner°
