Hmmm … I wonder if the lava stones are overpowering the pendant. It’s beautiful, and I’m thinking of the possibility of mookaite, if the colors are on target.

In my opinion, the size of the pendant balances the black lava, and the gold beads reflect the color. It ain’t broke, so please don’t fix it!

Robin – The lava beads are definitely the right size for this necklace and the matte color goes well with the pendant. I’ve never seen bumblebee jasper before – it’s so pretty. It looks big. Tomasina is right about the gold beads. What type of beads are near the top – looks like they’re the right color also, Just enjoy.

The beads at the top are bumblebee sticks. The pendant looks very oversized in the picture- it’s 1 3/4inch wide. The lava stones are 8 mm. I definitely need to work on staging!

I personally love this just as is. There appears to be a black strip toward the bottom of the pendant that the lava rock helps it to stand out. I love the gold as it goes so well with the yellow. I’m like tomasina, it looks perfect and not in need of fixing.

Old art teacher’s trick…. put the necklace away where you can’t see it for about a week then take it out and re-evaluate it. You will be able to see what you’ve got which may not be what you wanted but it might be even better. I’ve used this trick for many years and find it allows me to really “see” what I have.

Yes, Robin the pendant does look larger than 1 3/4 inch. I also use the old art teacher’s trick…. But sometimes I forget to go back.

I hope I wasn’t sounding critical, I was just responding to your request for some ideas.

I think the pendant really stands out in this design. The lava rock works, and the gold accents tie the elements together. There are always hundreds of ways to make a piece, and I sometimes drive myself crazy with the ‘what-ifs’. Maybe you can pull some of the sticks closer toward the pendant…but, really, it definitely holds its own the way it is.
LRC’s idea about putting things out of sight for a while really works–even a few days will do. The fresh eye on it after some time clears up a lot of mental indecision about a piece. Upon another look, you will either like it or you will see what doesn’t work for you. I do it all the time. Fantastic tip worthy of consideration for sure.

Maggies Mom, As a friendly group of beaders, honest input, especially when asked, is what this is all about. I would want nothing less. Everyone sees things from different perspectives, with different likes & dislikes, and that’s what makes sharing our ideas so rewarding. Never be ashamed for your sincerity! :)

Crystal Canary, thank you … I was feeling kinda bad … I really enjoy seeing everyone’s ideas on LB, and am always inspired by different ways of doing things!

I’m with Tomasina about it not needing to be fixed. But if you just want to try it with something else, go for it. Something different: black cord, light brown cord, yellow silk sari cord — all three braided together. However, you don’t really need to change anything.

MM – no worries, my friend! I so appreciate everyone’s comments. I like honest thoughts- I get so inspired with everyone’s designs and comments. Thx for your suggestions.

I agree with putting it away for a week or so. If you pull it out and are unhappy, try again. Look at that magnificent pendant for inspiration. Try laying beads of similar colors next to it. Or even contrasting colors. You could try using beads of different textures/shapes as well. Or simply put a seed bead between each bead for added interest an movement.

I’m kinda late to the conversation but putting the work away for a bit really works for me. You’ve already got some good ideas. I like CC’s suggestion of pulling some of the sticks to the pendant especially. Maggie’s Mom, my first thought was the black was too stark but after looking closer I was unsure. The gold really does work well tho. It’s already beautiful but it’s fun to try all the what ifs. That’s why we create. ♡

I think that everyone has contributed wonderful ideas for every one of us who bead. I know that some pieces I made in the past, I question today. I have one I received a kit with it inside. I followed the directions and still don’t like it today. There weren’t enough beads so one strand is way too short. It is coming apart soon.

To be honest Robin, I agree with you that the lava necklace is ugly. The piece of jasper is so beautiful,I picture it in my mind on leather cord strap laying at breast bone area with any solid color tank-top or tshirt. Actually any type of cord huh :)

Perhaps some matte black onyx instead of the lava. It’s so much smoother and classy than lava.
