A pearl gallimaufry!

About this design:

I’ve been thinking about making a pearl necklace for awhile! I’ve had a “mason jar” of mixed pearls on a shelf begging to be used. I barely made a dent in the jar with this 54 inch necklace. I made it this long in order to double or triple the way to wear it. I really do like the way it turned out. There’s no rhyme or reason for the pattern except that there is 6 seed beads between. I originally wanted to use 6/0’s, but decided 8/0’s looked better. Thanks Beady for encouraging me to just go for it!

Assorted freshwater pearls, Swarovski pearls and Czech pearls. A mishmash of 8/0 seed beads and gold plated findings.

I love your necklace. I have lots of tiny beads and leftovers that I’ll no doubt make this type of bracelets and necklaces myself. Right now I’m going thru all my stuff and giving things away. I need to get my tiny apartment in better order. I gave up because I didn’t have a decent work space. Plus I’m just getting at that age where I don’t have the stamina to do all the much any more. But clutter tends to breed either frustration or depression. I’m ending up with a lot of greens like olive and dark moss greens and everything in between.

Great design that can be worn in so many ways. Long necklaces like this are fun to make especially when so much of it is random. Did you find keeping things random was a bit tricky? I find it is easy to fall into patterns when making a looooong necklaces.

Nancy, I’m sure you have many beauty pieces to cherish. I always love your fresh pics-! I’m learning as I get older that it’s ok to get rid of things – not that it’s easy, but sometimes it’s needed to make life easier.
LRC- it was tricky because random is not how I think, but I’m very drawn to that in jewelry. I bet others can see a pattern of sorts- did you? That’s funny you said that since I kept trying not to be so left brained or is it right brained? What ever it is- I was overthinking it! Anyhoo… it is what it is. That’s when I stop and watch criminal minds or SVU! Hahaha

Wow Robin – this looks great. Love the colors and textures and the randomness. Beautiful. 54 inches is a great length. Did you end up using wire and crimps?

    Love your title also.

Beady, yes I used wire and crimps. I think if I do another one like this I would like the seed beads be very neutral like cream, tan, etc. and would it be better to go matte on the seed beads?

Every inch of this beauty has something pretty to look at! Love pearls and using seed beads in between each one really shows them off.

Oh my goodness. I see one big mistake! If you can find it, you’ll be queen for the day!

Well Robin – Just go with your intuition – looks like it always works. I love all the seed beads – matte, ceylon, frost, inside color, opaque… To me they are all beautiful. I do love the combination of matte and shiny.

How elegant….I love pearls! I love that you can wear it in so many ways…what in the world is a gallimaufry?

  11. Beady Little Eyes

Also, matte beads are easier on the eyes. – Can’t find your mistake – so it was intentional.

  12. Robin nursechick
    Robin nursechick says:

A gallimaufry is a hodgepodge or collection of something. The mistake wasn’t intentional.

I know but I can’t find it – I’m pretty good at spotting mistakes because I’ve made so many.

In the bottom picture, between the 3 blue pearls and the white pearl- I picked up a corrugated crimp bead. It should have been a gold seed bead

Hahaha – Such a teeny, tiny little mistake (not) – no one will ever notice. I’m surprised you even noticed.
    Guess I’m no queen.

Robin, one of my favorite types of necklaces–a random mixture of different beads with a common theme–and yours being pearls! This is a fabulous creation. My opinion is–the longer the better–lots of length to wrap with creating lots of layers. Your designs have been very inspiring to me–I’ve jotted down lots of thoughts on little sheets of paper which are all over my bead desk. Things have been very busy for me lately, I wish I could get in there and bead! :)

Thanks Crystal- no the name is the same. Hope life calms down and allows for some beading time for you- you always do beautiful work!

Thanks Robin. I told hubby–I want to bead tomorrow! So we’ll see….
Here’s a funny story…He was walking around the back of me this afternoon as I was catching up on the posts here, and wanted to know where the ‘Tardis’ was–I told him ‘gallimaufry’ had nothing to do with Dr. Who. He is such a comedian, and always keeps me laughing. He’s also very patient with me and my ‘addiction’ to beads!
You’re on a roll, can’t wait to see what’s next!

That’s funny! I guess you could call my bead room my Tardis – my spacecraft to the world of beading – except it’s not a blue police box. Heehee

This is a joyous piece with its incumbent conversation! Love random mixed stone pieces … I also have a problem maintaining randomness … should just walk away for a bit. Matte seed beads might enhance the beauty of the pearls as they tend to have such a lovely sheen.
Our 47-year old has watched “Dr. Who” since he was old enough to understand it. He has painted his Man Cave door to look like the outside of the Tardis. You might consider that idea, Robin. Have fun!

This is so beautiful. I love long necklaces. This one is just wonderful. It’s such a pleasure to look at all the different shapes, colors, and textures. I would like to have seen that Mason jar full of pearl goodness.

OK Robin. I have only ever heard this word “gallimaufry” one other place. Are you a “nobody”?
PS: I am a nobody and also a nursechick. Love your jewelry!
