Vintage UFOS

About this design:

These are some very old UFOS (unfinished objects). I don't know why I never finished them. They were almost done but I get distracted. I was less experienced but I still like them. They have acquired a little tarnish, and since this isn't sterling silver I wonder if anyone knows how to remove it or brighten it up.

Components:

18 and 24 guage craft wire. 2 montees. 6 Drop beads. 2 fancy ear wires.

Love your earrings. Nice chandelier touch to them. And wonderful colors. And I love your fancy earwires.

Found a link to cleaning jewelry at Readers Digest https://www.rd.com/list/cleaning-jewelry/

I like to use ProtectaClear on metals to coat them and avoid tarnishing. The people who work there are very knowledgeable and offer help if you can’t figure out which of their products to use.

Thanks Beady. I will try that. I was still learning when I started these. I still am actually. Then I got frustrated and put them in the UFO pile. I might just redo them and make them neater. The wire is a bit nicked and the weaving could be neater, but I like them as they are. I’ll see if I can clean them up. I need to finish all these UFOS or rip them up and use the beads in something else. It’s time, LOL.

I think these are absolutely stunning! I love the intertwined bars and how you staggered their lengths at the bottom. The tight weaving sure adds a wonderful textural element. As far as the tarnish, I have one of those ‘Buffy’ wiping cloths, and it works wonderfully–never really needed anything more. It’s a simple solution that works for me. After cleaning, then store them in a small zip-top bag like the ones Lima ships their products in. I always reuse them for storage or something.

Wow…K Ralston…these are stunning! I love your fancy wirework!! Btw, I always wanted to ask you…is Jazz a dog or a cat?

Thanks Crystal. I will get some of those wipes. I may stop being lazy and just redo them, if Jazz will give me a moment, LOL. Sweetjane, Jazz is a tiny tiny dog. 7 lbs. She had another seizure last week and I have been watching her like a hawk. She likes to drink out of my glass but I read that caffeine can cause seizures so now I have to keep 2 glasses by the bed, hers and mine. There were no more seizures after that until last week. I had given her a little antihistamine because we are suffering from the high pollen. That may have been the problem, even though the vet prescribes it. I don’t handle antihistamines well either, so no more of that. She’s a challenging little diva.

I know you take the best of care of Jazz…embrace the time you have together. I just had to put my Sidney down last night…something got a hold of him. Incredible sadness. No more pets.

Oh, I’m so sorry Sweetjane. Sidney was so special. The tragedy of sharing our lives with them is that we have to say goodbye, but it would be worse if we left this world first because they need us. Another friend will come into your life and he or she will not be Sidney, but will have it’s own unique personality and be a perfect friend when you are ready. I had a dog Mouse once and when he died I didn’t handle it well. But then came Squirt, abandoned and hungry and coming right up to the car as I drove in, asking for help. We save them and we save ourselves. Jazz was in terrible trouble when I found her too. There are so many special ones and too few of us who will treat them with the love and respect they deserve.

Thank you K Ralston… I have had the thought of fostering or an adult cat that needs a home. I need some time now to grieve.

Jane, I am so sorry to hear about Sidney–my heart aches over the grief you must be feeling as I remember it well. Please know I will be thinking about you. Grieving is important, so give it all the time you need. Here’s a >HUG< for you (it was a deep, long one).

sweetjane – So sorry to hear you lost your sweet friend Sidney. I’ve lost many pets and it never gets any easier. Hug from me also.

Thank you all so much…I really felt your hugs. Sidney will be so missed…and I know it’s going to take awhile. I think once I can back into making jewelry…that will be a great distraction.

It amazes and delights me how our little (and big) fur friends grab hold of our hearts.
So difficult to let them go.

These earrings are beautiful! Something else to try…I do this with sterling, copper, bronze, and silver plated jewelry. Toothpaste, which is a mild abrasive. And old toothbrush is great for getting into all the nooks and crannies, too. Especially chain. Rinse well, dry, and then store in an air tight container, or as has been suggested, a zip lock baggie. Keeping away the oxygen is the goal to reduce tarnishing.

Thanks Fresh Baked. I’ll try that as well.

    UFOs… Do they fly?

A very unusual design with beautiful beads and complex wire work. Love ‘em!
