About this design:

My friend Paul likes to say, "If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing." Well, I took his philosophy to heart on this one. Lots of glitter going on -- and I wonder if I've gone overboard -- but I still kinda like it.

Brushed copper coins and pointy pendant; sparkle-finish copper round; gold sponge coral tubes; faceted golden quartz twisted rectangles.

I love it! Definitely not overdone. The tones of these beads are subdued and the copper is brushed, and that gives it a classy, refined look. :-D
Where do you get your brushed copper beads? They’re so beautiful. (I may have asked that before, sorry if I’m repeating.) :|

Thanks everyone — if you don’t think it’s overdone that I’ll put it out there and hope it sells. :)

A number of you have asked where I bought the copper beads (and other beads) I’ve included in my designs. I’ve written to some of you privately to explain and I believe I’ve posted a response on the board, too. But for those of you to whom I haven’t spoken about this, let me explain my feelings.

I don’t normally say where I purchase beads OTHER THAN THE ONES I purchase at Lima Beads. I do this out of respect for Lima Beads.

The way I see it, Lima Beads has created a wonderful forum for us, where so many of us take pleasure and inspiration, and I don’t feel good about promoting their competitors on their own message board.

In my ”real life” I work in brand marketing so perhaps I am extra sensitive to this stuff. Creating online communities is costly for companies. And although it may seem like they’re doing it out of the goodness of their hearts, they’re actually doing it because they want you to (a) like them and (b) buy more of their stuff. Not promoting their competitors is my way of being brand loyal to Lima Beads. They’re a small business competing against some mammoth companies and I want them to thrive.

I don’t judge anyone who passes along that kind of information here — but it does make me uneasy. So I don’t do it.

Hope you all understand and don’t hate me.

This is such a great piece – I really like it! I understand your philosophy totally, but for those parts/findings that they don’t sell I think it’s ok to tell about it.

Just to “weigh in” on the source for beads…I couldn’t agree more, and have frequently stated that LB is always my first “go to” supply….I love LB and am a loyal customer. On the other hand I think this website gives LB an opportuntiy to see what beaders like and are interested in when they select their inventory.

  18. doktordesigns
    doktordesigns says:

EXACTLY, Harmony. But let’s say I’m Lima Beads. I’m a smart online marketer and I’m investing time in monitoring what people are saying on the boards. I see the reaction to the piece that Susan puts up there and think to myself, hmmmmm, I ought to add some of those brushed copper beads to our site. I bet they’d sell! So I go out and try to find a reliable source for those beads. I can’t just buy a few and risk disappointing a lot of people if the orders start rolling in, so this is an investment. (As illogical as it sounds, inventory is NOT an asset, it’s a liability.)

But in the meantime, my customers have found those copper beads elsewhere. Why? Because that so-n-so Doktor Designs has blabbed all about them on my own message boards and sent my customers scurrying to competitive sites! Furthermore, my customers have found the beads for a lot less than I can sell them for — because they’re big companies and can buy at lower cost in volume. But I’m Lima and have to pay a premium for buying is smaller quantities.

So Lima decides not to take the risk of investing in these beads and the folks who thought they were cool in the first place wind up not being able to buy them at their fave online bead site. To me, that’s a lose-lose situation!

Again, I’m not trying to persuade anyone to my point of view — I’m just giving you a peek into how my pointed little head works. ;-)

    Harmony on Strings says:

I spent several years in retail and promotion so know exactly what you mean. But unlike some of the online bead stores, LB Design Gallery promotes beader’s designs without asking that only their products be used…the sight is to promote beading. I have been really interested in how LB has gone about adding products to their inventory…it appears to be well thought out…just how and when they would add findings, chain etc. If these lovely burnished copper beads were available on site at LB I would buy them. In the event I found them elsewhere I would most likely use them with a stone I found at LB. I suppose if I were LB monitoring the requests this might fall into a larger category that copper still seems to have appeal and that Susan has posted some very pretty and popular designs with burnish copper and if they come across some available they will take a longer look at stocking that item.

In any event I think you brought up a very important point that all of us who use this website be aware of the opportunity Lima Beads is offering us and we support them in return.

PS I like the way your mind works, your designs too.

    Little Round Chick says:

I agree whole heartedly with what you have said, Susan. I’ll admit there have been a few times I’ve given the name of a source in comments but they have been for items LB doesn’t carry. We owe them such a debt of gratitude for providing us with a place to exchange ideas and help each other when the design isn’t quite right. LB is #1 in my bookmarks and always the first place I check.
