Chatter

Golden Baubles Necklace

About this design:

Golden baubles adorn this woven necklace.

It's been extremely cold here for the last 3 weeks or so. Negative numbers in the teens and twenties. About 2 weeks ago I saw a cat in my yard. I thought it was the neighbor's cat so I went on not thinking much. But then it showed up over and over. My husband was walking our dog one morning and flushed the cat out of its hiding spot in our old duck house. I thought it was a full grown cat because it looked big. It came into my carport one morning (-20 degrees) so I brought it some hot water and a few crunchers. As it was eating my daughter came over an called it - it came to her. A kitten! Only 4 lbs. Just so bony. We brought it into the house and warmed it up and begin to feed it small meals. Such a fluffy soft little kitten. It only looked big because of the fur. It has a broken tail at the base of his spine so it drags on the ground. I believe someone dumped it in my yard because they didn't want to deal with it anymore. (happens rather frequently) It's not feral - seems domesticated. Anyway it's a calico so we assumed it was a female. But no - it's a male. Only 1 in 3000 calicos are male. He has a vet appt next week. Maybe amputation. He's very sweet but goes crazy for food and won't go outside.

Here he is. We have always named our cats after scientists. So this one earned the name Darwin.

This is so beautiful Beady. I love the pieces you have been doing with the golden tones and the bling. Yes, this is definitely blingy. And for some reason it makes me think of something ancient, something Moroccan perhaps. I love it. It warms my heart to hear about people who love and rescue animals. Unfortunately people find out about us and persuade us to take in the animals they don’t want to be responsible for, or dump them as you say. You have a wonderful heart. Darwin is beautiful and will reward you with much happiness.

Your necklace is so pretty. I really like the subtle color of the weave. It’s a nice contrast to the more complex bling. Your rescue story is very familiar to me. People are always “gifting” me with their unwanted animals. I have made a lot of furry friends living here. Darwin is beautiful. I’ve never seen a male calico before. He doesn’t want to go outside? Smart kitty!

awe Beady-I’m so glad you took him in. He’s a beautiful kitty. He’s probably never had a nice comfy comforter to lay on-I don’t I’d go outside either in that cold. Last night my cat, Oscar brought in a baby squirrel -in the kitchen. I also have 2 beagles who’s primary entertainment is chasing squirrels in the back yard. Needless to say, we tried to catch him-he was jumping and climbing up the curtains-total craziness. Sadly, my beagle caught it and that .was the end of that. On a good note, I’m glad your back (I hadn’t seen you post for awhile). Your necklace is beautiful. Is that a rope or more of a rounded square? It looks difficult. You do such awesome work! I’m sure Darwin might enjoy a beaded collar- maybe not for everyday especially if he starts to go outside when it warms up. My cat has lost every collar I’ve put on him!

    Thank you all so much.
Little Darwin is feeling much better. He was grooming himself this morning.
He already has rewarded me with happiness. I have 2 other cats and they are leaving him alone. Maybe they understand a little. But the dog doesn’t get it. Anyway I made poached chicken and poached fish for him. I give it to him along with the liquid. I add a little Dr. Martys to it and he gets so excited.

Beady, your beads & baubles are gorgeous! The embedded crystals create a stunning effect. Very nice work. Little Darwin is precious, and I’m so glad he has your love & attention to help him back to health & gain weight. He will repay you many times over with love & affection. Purrrrr…….

Beautiful necklace! I had a cat who had to have her tail amputated after she got into a neighbor’s car engine. She lived a very long time after that, until age 25, and did fine with no tail.

What a pretty kitty! That’s great you have rescued him. We are currently up to 13 +/- barn cats and are flying thru the food- even when we make a 50:50 mix of barn cat and meow mix. 30# doesn’t last long around here! (By the way I love your necklace. I have been experimenting with making pendants too recently. So much you can do with that pattern!)

Wow. Love to hear all the cat stories. I can’t believe how many cats you have Phoenix. I’ll bet that is expensive.
He went to the vet and is in good health. Now 5.6 lbs and healthy. He grooms himself and has started to play. Only problem .. he’s so famished all the time.. On the kitchen counter every 20 seconds.
Thanks Melody for telling me about you cat with the amputated tail. She lived longer than any cat I know of.
Darwin has an appt for the end of the month.
Can’t wait to see your pendants Phoenix.

Your golden baubles are beautiful and very elegant. Darwin is a calico male? Bless you for taking him in. I’ve had cats all of my life (and that is a loooong time) and I’ve seen a calico male only once. I used to show cats and saw a multitude of them but never a calico male in a show. Cats can spot a easy touch at 100 yards.
