A relative new-comer to the gemstone market, Ethiopian black opals have been mined commercially since approximately 2008. With stunning play of color and dark backing hues, these stones have become a quick hit! Ethiopian opals are mined in the Welo area of Ethiopia, and are thus also known as Welo opals.
Ethiopian opals are a type of hydrophane opal, formed due to volcanic activity. Total water content affects the overall appearance of an opal - less water means the stone will remain more opaque instead of translucent. It is important to note that opals should not be worn swimming or cleaned with chemical cleaners. Opals are best suited for earrings and necklaces to avoid excessive wear.
The Sanskrit word for precious stone, upala, is the origin of the word Opal. In metaphysical beliefs, Opals promote tranquility and healing. Ethiopian opals are specifically associated with purity of emotion. Opals are October’s birthstone.
