We're fairly sure the Grand Canyon would endorse Picture Jasper as a beautiful keepsake, if it could! The name Picture Jasper comes from describing the stone - Picture Jasper beads evoke scenes of the American West or pictures of unique rock formations.
Jasper is an opaque combination of chalcedony and quartz, and has been used in jewelry and decorative arts for thousands of years. Picture Jaspers form from mineral deposits usually in banded patterns. Naturally, this stone occurs in rich, earthy hues of golden brown, light amber, and rusty red.
Jasper was often the stone of choice among Ancient Minoan, Egyptian, and Sasanian (Persian) Empires. The name Jasper comes from old French, jaspre, meaning “speckled stone”. Most Picture Jasper is mined in Oregon, but other varieties are found in Indonesia and Wales.
Jasper is said to facilitate nurturing behaviors and benefit healing.
