Fossil corals are the fossilized remnants of ancient coral reefs. The striking pattern of a fossil coral is determined by the particular species of coral that became fossilized. The different colors of the naturally colored material are determined by their level of exposure to ground water and the amount of iron and other minerals in that ground water.
