More about Tourmaline

We're convinced this is the stone for everyone! Whether just beginning or 30 years down the road of jewelry-making, Tourmaline is a wonderful stone to utilize. Tourmaline beads can be colorless, pink, red, yellow, brown, green, blue, violet, black, and multi-colored. Our tourmaline beads come in an array of beautiful shapes and colors. We sell strands of black, pink, and multi-color! Tourmaline gets its name from the Sri Lankan “tur mail”, meaning multi-colored stone.

Tourmaline is not a single mineral species, but rather a group of 14 different mineral species including schorl (black due to iron) and dravite (brown due to magnesium). Most gemstone quality tourmaline is lithium-rich elbaite, named after the Italian island of Elba where many good tourmaline crystals were once found. Lithium-rich tourmalines come in many different colors, including blue, green, red, yellow, and pink. Uniformly colored tourmaline crystals are quite rare - most show various tones or different colors within the same crystal.

Tourmaline is said to help its wearers be open to love, by overcoming grief and emotional distress. It is also seen more generally as a stone of tranquility. Tourmaline is the birthstone for October, alongside opal.
