Paper Wheels

About this design:

I think as soon as I saw these paper beads for the first time I knew I had to put them into earrings. Unfortunately I really wanted to use the large saucer but it was just too heavy on my ears. As it turns out the medium saucers were a much better fit. I wanted to give the paper beads an earthier feel, so I paired them with turquoise bead chain and a snippet of leather lace. The leverbacks ear wires are my go-to for earrings, especially ones like this that will probably swing when I move.

What you’ll need: (buy products below)

  • 2 leverback ear wires
  • 2 medium paper bead discs
  • 4 3 bead or 4 1" section of bead chain
  • 4" length of soft leather lacing cut up the middle
  • 2 3" lengths of wire
  • 4 seed beads or small beads

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1:
Cut your chain into four lengths of three beads each or four 1" lengths.
Cut your leather lace lengthwise up the middle, giving you two sections.
Step 2:
Attach one end of the bead chain to the wire by forming a wire wrapped loop. Then string on a seed bead, your paper saucer, and another seed bead. Attach this to the bead chain again by forming a wire wrapped loop. You are essentially forming a bead link out of the seed beads and paper.
Step 3:
Take one of your lengths of leather and string through the top ends of your bead chain, forming a triangle. Tie a knot, then string the leather through the loops in the ear wires, knotting couple more times. Secure the knot with a dab of adhesive.
Step 4:
Repeat theses steps for the other ear.

Lots to look at and appreciate in these earrings. Probably very light and comfortable to wear, too.

I have some of these beads, they are lovely rustic looking beads. I would love to learn how to make these beads. I have tried and got pretty close, but not close enough. I would love to make them myself so I could choose any color I wanted.

I love this design, Ali ! Where are these paper beads made? I noticed they are listed separately from the African ones. Just want to thank you for all your tutorials and helpful tips. I keep buying great stuff from Lima Beads, but I’m still a beginner at figuring out what to do with everything. You have the best website for inspiring creativity.
