Robin in the Tree Necklace

About this design:

The colors for this piece are inspired by the melted collage of color on the focal leaf (I used the Melting Pot to emboss it). The Humble Beads tiny discs are great in a project like this, where I want a great impact of color and pattern, but not the weight of glass, metal or stone. The Sari silk used is one of my favorites... the mustard tones are so earthy. Using the royal blue waxed linen and the olive craft wire allowed me to bring in some accent color without being too overpowering.

What you’ll need: (buy products below)

  • focal created using the Melting Pot focal, 3 colors of embossing powder, clear UTEE, project craft sheet, Melting Pot
  • set of tiny disc polymer clay beads that pick up on the colors from your "melted" focal
  • a small/medium sized focal that is heavier, to weight down the collage of vocals off the Sari silk
  • 1' Sari silk
  • 1.5' 2mm leather cord
  • 5 3" snips & 1 6" snip of 22 gauge craft wire
  • 2" 9.5mmx6.5mm chain or slightly larger
  • 4 4" snips of 4 ply waxed linen
  • 18" of 4 ply waxed linen for hook

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1:
Create a cool focal melting your favorite colors together using the Melting Pot.
Step 2:
Make 5 wire wrapped links with tiny polymer discs.
Step 3:
Using a length of Sari Silk that has been knotted, attach a 1" length of chain. Take your chosen focal(s) and attach to the chain.
Step 4:
For the right side of the necklace, create a chain using 4 of the wire wrapped links you made by connecting them with waxed linen.
Step 5:
Connect your 5th wire wrapped link to the left side of the necklace using a couple links of chain. Knot the Sari Silk to the chain.
Step 6:
Knit waxed linen around the hook. Then attach hook end to the leather cord. The hook will attach to the chain on the left side.

Thanks everyone! I wasn’t sure about the robin head either, but I made a necklace for my mom using one and fell in love, so I made another :-)

I love the hook also! It was one of the first things I noticed. The entire piece is gorgeous. Nicely done!

hAHAHA Deb ;) I kind od see the head as chopped of the body… I know I know I have a wild imagination… If I had that head I would have to do a body for it I think.

Hope no one starts to unlike the head due to me now.

Ali I do love your design, it’s just the head…

Ali, I love this very earthy and organic design. You have such a way with colors and fibers!

Frida, I always thought the robin’s head looked odd, too! But, I think I can be “friends” with it now!

Hi, Ali. This has nothing to do with your necklace, but I was wondering out stringing chain; does it have a lobster clasp on the end? If so, how do I get the beads over it? If not, how do I attach one?

Thanks for all your help, Ali,
    Evangelina

Ya I agree.the head creeps me out. The piece is so earthy and natural. I love it. That head is just too weird.

Beautiful colors, knotting and pendant. Great use of the Humble Beads, too. I watched the tutorial–you made it seem practical and easy. Must try that!

  17. Ali
    Ali says:

The stringing chain does not have anything attached to it. You would need to use a fold over crimp end 8×2.5mm. We offer these in all the same finishes as the stringing chain. Then all you need to do is attach a clasp either using a jump ring or by creating a wire wrapped link. Hope that helps!

Haven’t checked in in a while — but was thrilled to see the melting pot. I have been wanting to try enamel, but couldn’t face the big investment. this looks great. My vote on the necklace is it is great!!, the robin head, however, um, think I’d find a different bead.
