Wrapped Arc Necklace

About this design:

Color blocking and fibers in jewelry making is a trend that can be seen throughout Etsy & Pinterest. I wanted to create something earthy, yet tidy that is quick and easy to make. The color options and texture of the unpolished hemp make it perfect for this aesthetic, especially when combined with the natural antique brown leather and the large Vintaj chain.

What you’ll need: (buy products below)

  • 11 - 30" cut lengths of hemp cord in variety of complementary colors
  • 1 - 18" length of 4mm leather cord
  • 1 - adhesive (hypo cement)
  • 2 - 8" length of large Vintaj chain
  • 1 - clasp

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1:
Gather all your materials. This project is really fast if you start out with all the supplies you need :)
Step 2:
Add adhesive to the ends of the leather cord and a bit along the strand where the 2 ends come together. Have the ends join together near the center of the focal. Don't be afraid to be liberal with the adhesive.
Step 3:
Wrap your first bit of hemp around the 2 ends of leather you are gluing together, then tie off with an overhand knot and glue leaving a short tail to be wrapped over as you move along with your color wrapping.
Step 4:
Now it's time to wrap the next color. Begin by wrapping over top of the previous color slightly and knotting, leaving a tail. Glue the knot and add a bit down the leather too, then wrap the hemp around and around until you want to change to a new color. Knot & glue as in step 3 to begin & finish off each color.
Step 5:
Complete your color pattern.
Step 6:
Attach the chain links directly to the leather loops at either end of the focal. Add a clasp to the back and you're done!

..whipping will work well with hemp. I’ve used it to bind tassles of embroidery thread for ~20years

I love this piece. It is so fun and colorful! I am going to try the technique on a multi-strand bracelet. A row of hemp wrapped leather, just chain and just leather.

MFrance, do you apply any glue to the common whipping when you’re finished? That’s a neat website, thanks for sharing!

Love this, Miss Ali! Digging threw my craft supplies right now looking of the package of colored hemp cord I bought years ago and never used.
