Cascading Gemstones & Leather

About this design:

Why should bracelets get all the fun of stringing on leather? As soon as I saw the large hole African turquoise and crazy lace agate I was hooked. The rose quartz is a summery complement to the other 2 stones that would go equally well with a darker palette.

What you’ll need: (buy products below)

  • 19' 2mm leather cord - cut into 6 equal lengths
  • 1 6x17mm deco slide
  • 2 strands of round 6mm large hole beads
  • 2 strands of 2 different large hole faceted nuggets
  • 2 strands of 2 different large hole faceted round 8mm beads
  • 2 strands of 2 different large hole round 8mm beads
  • 8' hand dyed silk ribbon

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1:
Gather your supplies.
Step 2:
Lay out your 4 main necklace strands. The other 2 are lighter with just a few beads and knots on each strand.
Step 3:
Gather your strands of leather together side by side. Slide the 6x17mm deco slide over the strands. At 16" from the end, gently press on the slide to crimp down on the leather. Taking the 16" side of the leather strands, pair up the cord and begin a flat braid.
Step 4:
Once the braiding is complete, make an overhand knot at end of braid. Then knot at the end of each strand, giving a tassel like appearance.
Step 5:
On the side of leather that's not braided, string the beads onto the appropriate cords, knotting every now and then along strands. Make each strand length approx 1" from inside to outside strands.
Step 6:
Again, pair up your strung leather cord and knot off each pair.
Step 7:
Create a closure loop at one end of each pair using an overhand knot.
Step 8:
Wrap ribbon around the combined loops.
Step 9:
This is how my closure looks when secured.
Step 10:
Wrap the ribbon around crimp, being careful not to completely cover it.
Step 11:
Embellish the leather cord strands with bits of knotted ribbon.

Thanks everyone … I was originally planning on using the purple crazy lace beads, but even though they looked cool with the other stones I had chosen, I really wanted something lighter earthy. The rose quartz really does the trick when combined with the crazy lace and African turquoise :-)

Fantastic! I never would have thought of adding rose quartz to that combination of beads but it sets off the other beads perfectly and the contrast in texture really draws your eyes to it.

Could you expand on instruction 5 a bit? Do you mean 1″ shorter than the outside strands?

I was just looking at this design & I agree that in step 5, she meant to say make each strand about 1″ shorter than the one above- just start with the longest strand & shorten each above by 1″ successively.
