Who doesn’t love a sparkly, exquisite geode as a display piece? Have you ever wanted one that wasn’t as heavy or scratchy? Now you can make one of your own and with your own color scheme! Let’s go! Please note that this pattern is written for intermediate crocheters. If you are a beginner and need to familiarize yourself with basic crochet stitches, you can view the "Crochet Stitches 101" in "Tips & Techniques". Basic Construction and Some Notes: The geode has two layers: the inside “cup”, where the crystal is, and the outside “cup”. We begin with crocheting the inside cup from the base to the widest part of the rim. Beads are then threaded onto a separate strand of yarn and are crocheted in a spiral onto the inside. We then crochet a second cup slightly larger than the first. The first cup will nest inside the second cup. The two layers are seamed together. Yarn ends are woven in. Start every round with a chain 1; this will be considered the first stitch. If you start the round with an increase, then chain 1 and sc into the same stitch. Finish every round with a slip stitch to the first chain in the round.
You can also choose other large-hole crystal beads, but different shapes and sizes may give a different effect from the finished-pieces shown in this pattern.

To add the beaded geode interior:
Cut a length of yarn around 2 meters (5-6 feet) long, and thread approximately 3 strands of the 5x8mm Czech Glass beads, approximately 75 beads. Reserve the 4th strand for now.
Create a slip not at one end. Beginning in the hole below any stitch at the ending row, pull the loop through, including the short end. Then pull yarn back through the other side until the slip knot, on your hook, is now close to the edge of the cup. Begin making chain stitches INTO the side of the cup, always through the little holes just under the stitches, moving from right to left, each time trapping one bead on the INSIDE of the cup.
You can decide how close you wish the beads to appear. I skipped one hole every two holes. That spaced the beads out a little so I didn’t need more than 3-4 strands of beads.
Continue chain stitching your beads onto the inside of the cup in a spiral around the cup, heading down into the cup row by row, until you spiral the beads to the very center of the base. See pics.
Once done, pull your yarn all the way through to the outside of the cup, cut a 5 inch length, and then securely tie the end off, so the beads will not come out.
Now begin crocheting the outside cup.

Row 5: [Inc 1, sc 7], repeat all the way around. Join to first stitch with slip stitch. Increased 4 stitches. Total: 36 stitches
Begin crocheting the sides of the outside cup.
Row 6 & 7: Sc in every stitch around, join with slip stitch. Total: 36 stitches
Row 8: [Inc 1, sc 8], join with slip stitch. Total: 40 stitches
Row 9 & 10: Sc in every stitch around, join with slip stitch. Total: 40 stitches
Row 11: [Inc 1, sc 9], join with slip stitch. Total: 44 stitches
Row 12 & 13: Sc in every stitch around, join with slip stitch. Total: 44 stitches
Row 14: [Dec 1, sc 4, Dec 1, sc 3], repeat to end of round, join with slip stitch. Total: 36 stitches
Slip your inside cup into your outside cup - should be a perfect fit! You know have exactly 36 stitches at the top row of each of your cups. Using either a darning needle or a crochet hook, you can now seam the two cups together at the top. My preferred method for seaming includes doing slip stitches onto the outside of the two layers, through one stitch from the outer cup AND inner cup. Continue all the way around until you reach the first slip stitch. Cut the end, and weave it in securely. You can tie it off and then use a darning needle to pull the end into the area between the two cups, and cut short. Now it will never come out.
