For those who are already comfortable with basic crochet stitches, here is an intermediate crochet technique that produces two-toned cords. You can combine this with bead crochet, slip on large hole beads, or add a clasp and wear them directly. Crocheting two-toned cords with 1.0 mm Linhasita Waxed Polyester Cord will create sturdy cord that will hold its shape. Crocheting with thinner or more flexible cord, or in fibers such as cotton or nylon, will result in more dainty cord. The sky’s the limit! This tutorial, using 1mm cord, creates a chevron cord that is approximately 4mm wide.
Optional: - Beads or focals to embellish your cord - Darning needle, or other tools for finishing your creation
Choose your two colors in the same thickness. I used Linhasita 1mm cords in contrasting colors, so that the chevron will ‘pop’. For this tutorial, I’ll refer to them as cords W (white) and B (black).
Begin by creating a slip knot with both colors
Insert your crochet hook and pull the slip knot snug but just a little loose around the hook. Note which color cord is closest to the hand holding the hook. Here it is Cord B.
Wrap W around the hook and pull through to create your chain. Now you have one loop of W on your hook.
Now insert your hook through ONLY the opposite color loop below. Here it is Cord B. Then wrap the opposite color, here Color W, and pull through.
Now it is Cord W. Wrap the opposite color, here Color W, and pull through.
Continue in this manner, always alternating colors, to achieve a nice striped chevron cord. When you’re finished, you can pull both colors through the final loop, and finish your cord as you like. If you make a mistake, it’s easy to simply pull the chains out until you remove the mistake, and resume.
Finish your creation with a clasp and charms, or any way you wish!
