I have weddings coming up, and I thought gemstone hair clips would look great with an updo and my dress.

Supplies you’ll need:

  • Hair comb (can buy on Amazon or at Target)
  • gemstone chips: Hubei turquoise or your favorite gem
  • 28 gauge wire
  • mother-of-pearl stars - I added a black lip shell option, as well
  • 12mm or 15mm mother-of-pearl crescent - I added a black lip shell option, as well
  • 3mm Czech glass fire-polished rounds
  • 3mm pearls
  • super glue

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step

Step 1

Cut 2.5' of wire.

  • Image 1: Wrap the wire around the comb twice
  • Image 2: Twist the short and long tails together. Trim off the short tail.
  • Image 3: Slide on 4-5 chips
  • Image 4: Bring the wire down and through the first space between the combs.
  • Image 5: Slide on 4-5 more chips, bring the wire down through the next space between combs
  • Image 6-10: Repeat adding chips and wrapping the wire.

Step

Step 2

The wire should have ended up through a comb pointing up.

  • Image 1: Slide on the crescent moon, you are using the 12mm size; you may want to add a bead under it to lift it higher.
  • Image 2: Bring the wire down the front and up through the next space between combs.
  • Image 3: Wrap the wire around the base of the crescent
  • Image 4-6: Bring the wire down through the same combs again and around the crescent again. You can keep wrapping until it is tight enough.
  • Image 7: Slide on 3-4 chips
  • Image 8-9: Bring the wire over the top of the comb and through the space between the combs.
  • Image 10: Slide on 3-4 chips. Bring the wire over the comb on the left side of the crescent and through the space between the combs
  • Image 11: Finish wrapping the rest of the beads on like you did in Step 1.

Step

Step 3

  • Image 1-4: Now you have reached the end on the left side, bring the wire behind the comb and through the next comb space to the right.
  • Image 5: Bring the wire up through the previous wires on the back side, pull through, creating a loop with the wire.
  • Image 6: Bring the wire end through the loop and pull tight. Trim off the excess wire. You can use a pair of pliers to flatten any pointed edges down and a dot of super glue to make sure it's extra secure.

Step

Step 4

  • Image 1: Cut a 2' piece of wire. Attach the new piece to the end by twisting the wire on. Trim off the short end of the wire.
  • Image 2: Slide a Czech glass round onto the wire
  • Image 3: Fold the wire over the top of the bead and twist the wire.
  • Image 4: Bring the wire down between a row of beads. Slide a pearl on.
  • Image 5-6: Fold the wire over the bead and twist the wire.
  • Image 7-9: Slide on a Czech glass round. Fold the wire over the bead and twist. Bring the wire through the next space between combs. The wire should be on the back side now.

Step

Step 5

  • Image 1: Slide on a Czech glass round and a star.
  • Image 2: Pull the beads up a little higher on the wire, then fold the wire over the star bead and twist several times.
  • Image 3-4: Bring the wire up through the next comb space and over the front of the comb between the chip beads.
  • Image 5: Slide on a Czech glass round.
  • Image 6: Fold the wire over the bead and twist several times. Bring the wire around the back and up through the next comb space and up through the space between the chip beads.
  • Image 7: Slide a pearl and a Czech glass round - you may want to add more bead sprouts if you are using the 12mm crescent to fill in space.
  • Image 8: Pull up on the bead so they will be taller when twisted. Fold the wire over the beads and twist. Bring the wire down the backside and up the front.
  • Image 9: Slide on a star bead. Fold the wire over the bead and twist several times.
  • Image 10: Keep wrapping and adding beads as shown.

Step

Step 6

To finish, bring the wire through some of the wire on the back side. Before you pull tight, create a loop. Feed the wire end through the loop and pull tight. Use pliers to flatten any points or bumps. Use a dot of super glue on the cut ends, if needed.
